Universal's Classic Monster-Verse Adds MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT Screenwriter

Last month, Universal hired Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski to work on their reboot of The Wolf Man, which will be apart of their classic monster cinematic universe and today Deadline reports that Universal has also hired Monsters: Dark Continent co-screenwriter, Jay Basu, to work on their monster-verse. Though, no details were provided about which monster(s) Basu will be working on.

Universal is one of the few major studios that doesn't have any superheroes, so they are hoping they can build their own cinematic universe with their classic monsters. Alex Kurtzman ("Star Trek Into Darkness")  and Chris Morgan ("Fast & Furious") are overseeing the interconnected stories, which will focus on "action-adventure" instead of horror. This summer's Dracula Untold kicked things off, and the next film in the universe will be the reboot of The Mummy, which will be in theaters June 24, 2016.

Do you guys and gals like the addition of British screenwriter, Jay Basu?

Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have now spread worldwide. In the Middle East a new insurgency has begun. At the same time there has also been a proliferation of Monsters in that region. The Army decide to draft in more numbers to help deal with this insurgency.

I know for sure that there is a alternate timeline that includes a better vision for the Universal Monsters-Verse.

Just need to find a way to get to this magical place.

Unfortunately the way it is going that "magical place" will never exist in the universal monster realm.

Think I might need to see that movie looks pretty f*cking good. Looks like the monsters from "The Wasteland" in the "Dark Tower" series. . . . . .Oh and Universal sucks or something . . . . action/adventure etc etc . . .sucks balls.

DId Universal already try this with Benecio Del Toro on the "Wolfman" movie?

I would love to see this universe re-vamped, but I don't know if it is possible.

Quite honestly I have not seen a single person in person or online who has a shred of interest in these properties. Getting the writer of a sequel that the majority of moviegoers are completely unaware even existed isn't helping.

I hate to sound cynical but this has fail written all over it. Its such an obvious cash grab that I have a hard time imagining why any filmmaker attached would really give a creative damn.

IF they want their "universe" to work they are join got have to do cross-overs: Dracula vs. The Werewolf vs. The Mummy vs. Frankenstein's Monster vs Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde etc.

@Sipprelle, really man? There have been a thousand Dracula remakes in the horror vein, if that's what you want go watch those, don't poop in other people's party because you want more of the same bs. They took a risk with Dracula but not really, nobody is scared of Dracula anymore, i don't know if i ever really was, kids dress up like dracula, it was the logical evolution of the character look at king kong or godzilla, both were monsters when they started out and now are good guys, give it a chance without the snobby premade conclusions and just watch it as a movie.

At a Hollywood party some time ago:
Some random guy: You know what this party needs.. Whores!
Matthew Broderick: Oh.. ok guys, I will go out and take a look and see what I find.

And they lived happely ever after.

True story

I'm a fan of Universal Monsters and all...but an "action/adventure" gambit doesn't sit well with me. They are monsters, and one doesn't exactly think action or adventure when they hear the word...they think horror. Keeping with that tone would be preferred. Doesn't have to be over the top gory, but try to stick to the roots of the word MONSTER.

Horror.

Carnage.

Suspense.

Not explosions, car chases or gunfights.

Despite the godawful Dracula Untold, I was excited for this Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe revival (as a huge fan of the original Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe from the early to mid 1900s) until they announced that they would be turning these horror icons into action heroes. That really pissed me off. This thing is going to crash and burn, especially considering they obviously don't understand the characters they are revamping, which they showed with the action hero-announcement and Dracula Untold.

Dracula Untold wasn't a Dracula movie, it was a pitiful excuse of a Batman Begins rip-off. Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr, Dean Carradine and everyone else involved in the original series would be ashamed.

@huckfinnisher That's nice and everything, but I will most definitely express a negative opinion regarding these films considering I don't see factors of interest.

@Sipprelle, I'm not saying your wrong I just don't see what there is not to like about the movie, if its just that its not the Dracula we are used to then I guess I understand. I just feel like people are seeing something I'm not and judgin on the amount of hate the movie gets when I hear what is so bad about it I'll probably be inclined to agree. But everyone just says it sucked...

They would be better off taking this budget, splitting it ten ways and funding ten original scripts with young writers and directors. Odds are one of them will pan out. I like those odds better than this desperate move.

The way I see it, when studios stick to a more traditional horror approach, such as the the wolf man or werewolf the beast among us, doesn't seem to work for anyone. Dracula untold (i did not see, but I will once it is on blue ray) also appears not to have worked. The mummy franchises on the other hand blitzed the box office, whilst Van Helsing did not. The lesson, action works when done right and pleases the masses, horror does not. Just remember the shellacking the wolf man received upon its release, which I thought stuck true to the original material. The problem is, nobody knows what the frick they want! Just don't be too negative and let an opportunity to keep these franchises alive go silently into that good night.

Hrm, can't say I'm overly excited - Drac Untold wasn't too bad, I honestly didn't expect much from it. Penny Dreadful was very good however, so it is possible. Seems this team of monsters are all going to be sympathetic characters with powers and conscience all involved in whatever revenge game Charles Dance's character has in mind.
