BOX OFFICE: RED 2 And R.I.P.D. Top Open At #4 And #7; PACIFIC RIM Drops To #6

The Conjuring looks set for a solid weekend at the box office, but everything else? Not so much. Hit the jump for details on how big new releases like Red 2 and R.I.P.D. are set to perform this weekend as well as an update on Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.

With a lot of comic book fans glued to their laptops for Comic-Con updates or actually at the event in San Diego, it looks set to be a pretty quiet weekend at the North American box office. However, that may have more to do with how uninterested the majority seem to be in these two movies! Red 2 has a decent enough 'B+' CinemaScore, so it could perform a little better than expected, but lousy reviews and a 'C+' score for R.I.P.D. mean that it looks set to be the latest big budget 2013 flop. The main reason that it looks set to be such a disaster is down to the ridiculously high budget as it cost over $150 million (after production rebates). Meanwhile, Pacific Rim may now end up eventually reaching $100 million domestically, but it's going to have to perform VERY well overseas if it hopes to be anything other than a disappointment for Warner Bros. Here's the Top 10 in full:

1. The Conjuring (New Line/Warner Bros) NEW [Runs 2,903] R
Friday $16.5M, Weekend $39.0M

2. Despicable Me 2 (Illumination/Universal) Week 3 [Runs 3,820] PG
Friday $7.5M (-44%), Weekend $24.0M, Cume $275.0M

3. Grown Ups 2 (Columbia/Sony) Week 2 [Runs 3,491] PG13
Friday $6.5M (-60%), Weekend $20.0M, Cume $79.5M

4. Red 2 (Summit/Lionsgate) NEW [Runs 3,016] PG13
Friday $6.2M, Weekend $18.0M

5. Turbo (DreamWorks Animation/Fox) Week [Runs 3,806] PG
Friday $6.0M, Weekend $19.0M, Cume $27.7M

6. Pacific Rim (Legendary/Warner Bros) Week 2 [Runs 3,285] PG13
Friday $4.8M, Weekend $16.0M, Cume $68.0M

7. R.I.P.D. (Universal) NEW [Runs 2,852] PG13
Friday $4.8M, Weekend $12.0M

8. The Heat (Twentieth Century Fox) Week 4 [Runs 2,689] R
Friday $2.9M, Weekend $9.5M, Cume $129.5M

9. Monsters University (Pixar/Disney) Week 5 [Runs 2,186] G
Friday $1.6M, Weekend $5.3M, Cume $249.3M

10. World War Z (Paramount) Week 5 [Runs 2,066] PG13
Friday $1.5M, Weekend $5.0M, Cume $186.8M

The Conjuring looks f*cking awesome, but to see Grown Ups 2 on the third spot? WTF is wrong with people?!

Ryan Reynold is a curse to comic book movie. Hollywood need to stop forcing him to be some kind of star.

What do you expect from RED 2 and RIPD. The advertising seemed mediocre for them.

The Conjuring looks really good though.

I'm happy RIPD is doing bad, it was horrible. And The Conjuring was a really, really solid horror film. Glad to see it's doing well.

Can't wait to see the Conjuring. Saw the trailer in the theater and it was creepy as [frick].

Didn't even know RED2 was out. Haven't seen a single trailer, TV Spot or poster. Didn't even know it existed.

RIPD was pretty funny. What people don't realize is that ryan was the best thing to happen in those bad films. He proved himself to be THE guy to play deadpool in blade trinity and the beginning of wolverine origins (before the studio butchered him) and he wasn't the reason GL was bad. It was the bad script.

Nothing. But putting Grown Ups 2 against Red 2, Turbo (another Ryan Reynolds feature), and R.I.P.D. isn't exactly what I would use to draw attention away from a comedy movie.

@highflyer

I see it as the opposite. Reynolds in my opinion, has never been the saving grace of any movie. Granted I thought Green Lantern had more than a couple of problems (Blake Lively not being one of them) but I never bought Reynolds as Hal Jordan.

That's a damn shame about pacific rim. Thought it was a really fun movie. Hopefully it earns enough for a sequel. [frick]in idiots seeing grown ups 2 over pac rim. Explain that sheet to me.

Ryans agent sucks. He needs to stop attempting big budget stuff for awhile and get some good small movies under his belt. Not one big budget movie he has been in had a good script. I feel bad for this because movies like smokin aces and Ammityville horror, and buried really show he is a good actor.

Luckily Pacific Rim didn't end needing a sequel. In fact it kinda ends in a way where a sequel would seem forced. Like "uh oh guys theres another rift between demensions and even BIGGER monsters are coming out!" haha it ended they win good summer movie, america loses as it made Grown ups two #1. I mean come on people

RIPD wasn't terrible.
Grown Ups 2 is terrible.
Despicable Me 2 is great.
Pacific Rim is great for its target audience not the general audience.
The Conjuring was ok- formulaic but ok.
Turbo ? have not seen yet- will check it out when I see RED 2.

It wasn't until after Man of Steel was released that I realized how stunningly blue Traue's eyes were.

Maybe, maybe not. Godzilla is a much more famous and recognizable character and any well enough plot and destruction on his part might just get the crowd it needs.

damn pacific might hit 100 millions. I thought that movie wouldn't pass 70 million. I guess del toro and his creepy movies have some fans.

why eeveryone thinks ripd is flopping because of Reynolds. the movie looks horrible but I blame the production and direction.

Pacific Rim was amazing and was the best movie I've seen this year. Anyone that saw Grown Ups 2 is a disgrace to humanity.

JoeAngersIII - 7/20/2013, 7:35 AM
@marvel72. It's not really fair to say that Pacific Rim only made $105,280,292 for the week, since your taking the week's domestic number and adding last weekend's international numbers. The fact is, we won't know what the international numbers will be until the weekend's over, so for all we know, the real number for it's first week may be closer to $120 mil.
JoeAngersIII
JoeAngersIII - 7/20/2013, 7:46 AM
I also blame a lot of Pacific Rim's underperformance at WB's heels. Whether by design because of their split with Legendary, or because of ineptitude by their marketing dept, it almost seems like WB set up Pacific Rim to fail. I can understand the focus on the international market, but the idea that you would release one of your biggest movies of the year on only 3200 screens is baffling. As a point of comparison, Man of Steel and Iron Man 3 both opened in over 4,000 screens. There's no other summer blockbuster that opened with less than 3500 screens. Hell, even Grown Ups 2 opened in 200 more screens than Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim may become a case study on how not to market a critically acclaimed film.
