I didn't realize Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Guardians of the Galaxy were in open competition with each other.

One of my favorites this year, Matt Reeves is such a damn talented director, always wanted to see him tackle Batman.

The question of who are actually the apes metaphorically is unnecessary in terms of this movie. Both sides, the humans and the apes, didn't begin interfering with one another in terms of critical conflict until Koba framed the humans. Even though the term "ape" can barely be used to describe anything in this film metaphorically, I'm assuming that it is being used to discuss which side wronged the other, which would be the apes due to Koba's disloyalty and deception.

In terms being described as an "animal," it all depends on the connotation.
