AVATAR Cements Its Lead Over AVENGERS: ENDGAME At Global Box Office With $30.5 Million Return To Theaters

Moviegoers returned to Pandora this weekend as a remastered version of Avatar arrived in theaters, and it's now nigh on impossible for Avengers: Endgame to ever retake that #1 spot from the 3D blockbuster.

Avatar made its grand return to theaters this past weekend, but how did the movie perform nearly 13 years after originally arriving on the big screen? Well, the 3D blockbuster went straight to the #1 spot at the global box office, earning a respectable $30.5 million (comprising of $10 million domestically and $20.5 million internationally).

Re-released around most of the world, Avatar has reminded audiences of the amazing and immersive 3D world of Pandora leading into December’s highly anticipated release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The first film in the blockbuster franchise also added to its worldwide box office record as the highest-grossing film of all time, a record it briefly lost to Avengers: Endgame.

Here are some of the international box office highlights (via SFFGazette.com):

  • Opened #1 in France, Italy, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, Hungary, Oman, Qatar, Romania, Slovenia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Ecuador.
  • Opened as the #1 non-local title in Czech Rep, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea and Vietnam.
  • Avatar (re-release) posted higher openings than Titanic (2012 3D re-release) in France, Brazil, Mexico, Qatar, Romania, Czech Rep, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine, Kuwait, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Chile, Colombia, Peru and many smaller European markets.
  • Looking at like-for-like territories, the opening weekend of $20.5 million was higher than the entire run of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2022 re-release), +37% ahead of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (2012 3D re-release) and -19% below Titanic (2012 3D re-release), which opened during the Easter holidays.
  • Internationally, around 75% of box office came from 3D/4D/IMAX formats, with many markets posting especially high % shares. As a comparison, Avengers: Endgame was around 27%.

And some domestic highlights:

  • Avatar (re-release) opened #3 domestically with $10.0 million for the weekend.
  • Playing in a select 1,860 theatres, Avatar’s $10.0 million weekend is +85% ahead of the re-release for Spider-Man: No Way Home from Labor Day weekend ($5.4 million from 3,935 theatres).
  • The overwhelming 93% 3D share compares to the opening weekend of 2009’s Avatar (74% 3D | 26% 2D).  The 3D support is encouraging considering the usual 2D-dominant shares of recent tentpoles released in both formats (Thor: Love and Thunder – 90% 2D | 10% 3D).

So, it was a pretty good return to theaters for Avatar, and we're sure these numbers were probably helped by the fact the movie was quietly removed from Disney+ earlier this year.

Most importantly, the clear level of interest in the re-release of a movie that came out nearly a decade and a half ago bodes well for Avatar: The Way of Water. We're sure filmmaker James Cameron will be buoyed by that, while Avatar has now increased its lead over Avengers: Endgame to remain the highest-grossing movie of all time by enough that it should remain unbothered at #1 for a very long time to come.

Sure it's the leader in box office numbers. It's only been re-released like 5 times. Let's see what happens if Endgame gets that many re-releases.

Still baffles me how this movie made and is still making so much money yet I've never heard a single person talk about it IRL.

This is who asked for it.

It’s been re-released like 5 or 6 times now lol

I don’t think most ppl consider this movie to actually beat Endgame with all those rereleases other had. Lol

How is this even a thing? It’s silly how they keep throwing it back in play so they can regain their ”lead”. I love both but the game ended already. It should be original theatrical run vs original theatrical run. Which Endgame won, no do overs or penalty minutes. It’s not soccer

@Tpo81 - you're right. It's not soccer. It's business. And avatar has sold more objectively. Releasing more doesn't matter. Endgame can release again too if marvel and disney think it can sell.

@Origame - Disney owns both so they could give 2 origames

Let's round up the total to $50m, which means it'll only need to rerelease like 9 more times before it actually tops Gone With The Wind.

The sad current state of the cinemas, a billion dollar industry and no new (good) movies to watch.

Oh yeah, I saw it last Friday in the same IMAX theatre I saw on opening day in 2009. Some movies, even after multiple views at home, in initial release, can still captivate when revisited large. Interstellar rereleased at the Toronto Cinesphere in Feb. 2020 was like seeing it anew, especially having only been able to see it on a rather pathetic screen in the remote region I was living when it eventually hit our theatre in 2015. I kinda had that vibe of rediscovery with Avatar last week, and hope to see it again b4 it leaves. -And the HFR 3D scene played midcredits was fantastic 😎👏

avatar's derivative, but hollywood blockbusters have gotten so [frick]ing bad that the mere fact that james cameron actually gave a shit about what he was making already puts this above 90% of the shit churned out this year

Why are people acting like this isn’t an impressive rerelease? As if a popular rerelease is somehow a negative. This just had a much bigger rerelease than other recent rereleases like Spider-man: No Way Home, Jaws and ET. It just proves that there is still obvious interest in this franchise from general audiences.

It wasn’t Pocahontas- it was dances with wolves- literally the same damn story-just with large blue cat people- visually cool- but the story really? Unobtanium? Might as well just called it mcguffiniam.

But it translates well- avengers and other movies rely heavily on Americanisms that don’t translate well into other languages - where fast cars, transformers , and cat people are visual stories that can be easily viewed in any culture

going to watch it with my daughter tomorrow who is 11. shes seen the movie before and is a big fan but never got to watch it in 4DX so happy to rewatch it again for the total experience. its a good idea to re-release it just before the sequel, will generate a new generation of fans that missed the 3d experience the first time around because.... they weren't born or weren't old enough
