Avatar Director James Cameron Hints That He's Ready To Move On From The Sci-Fi Franchise

Avatar: Fire and Ash grossed $1.4 billion but was considered a disappointment compared to its predecessors. Now, with Disney eager to make the movies for less, James Cameron appears ready to move on.

The future of James Cameron's Avatar franchise remains in flux, and the filmmaker has now admitted he's beginning to think seriously about what comes next for him beyond Pandora.

While Disney still has Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 tentatively scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, neither sequel has officially entered production (some material has, however, been shot for the fourth chapter). That uncertainty, coupled with the escalating cost of making the movies, has inevitably raised questions about where Cameron's focus lies as he enters what he describes as the "last act" of his career.

Avatar: Fire and Ash was a box office success in 2025, earning $1.4 billion worldwide. However, it also fell well short of the franchise's previous highs, signalling a decline in interest after Avatar's $2.9 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water's $2.3 billion. With the series carrying enormous production budgets, each new movie needs to make big money to be considered a success.

Speaking after receiving a prestigious Canadian arts award, Cameron reflected (via SFFGazette.com) on spending more than two decades immersed in the world of Avatar and admitted he's considering moving on.

"That's the question of the hour for me," Cameron started. "There's been momentum in the Avatar universe for 21 years at this point because we started in 2005. I took a little time off to build a submersible and dive to the deepest spot on the planet, as you do, but I came back to Avatar after that. And it's been kind of an unbroken continuum."

"So this is the point where I'm looking at the landscape and asking, 'What are the other stories I want to tell? How many of them do I need to direct myself versus writing and/or producing with other filmmakers?'" he added, perhaps alluding to projects like Ghosts of HiroshimaThe Devils, and potential returns to franchises like Terminator and Alita: Battle Angel.

Cameron later revealed that he's evaluating future projects based on the impact he believes they'll have. "The criterion — I've literally mapped this out for myself over the last two weeks — I started with, 'What will do the most good?' I put that in block letters at the top. And I started looking at all the projects I'm most fond of, asking, 'How's this going to improve our condition? How's that going to make the world better for our kids?'"

"I haven't made those decisions yet. I'm still in this liminal state of mapping out... the last act, if you will. And I don't know if that last act will last a year or 20 years," he concluded.

Despite Cameron's comments, work on the Avatar sequels has not stopped entirely. Producer Rae Sanchini confirmed in April that scripts for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are finished and that the creative team is continuing to move "full speed ahead." Cameron later revealed he was exploring new filmmaking technologies that could allow the remaining sequels to be produced "in half the time for two-thirds of the cost."

For now, Disney continues to list December 21, 2029, for Avatar 4 and December 19, 2031, for Avatar 5

I hope so. Avatar 3 genuinely sucked. He's my favorite director of all time and I think Avatar 2 is one of his best but Avatar 3 is his worst movie by far.

@XenoJazz -

I have only seen the first movie; and as entertaining as that one was, I felt no rush to watch the second or third movie, at all,
there's nothing appealing (at least to me) with any of them blue characters, plus the gimmick of 3-D wore off already, so ..

Thank goodness. I have zero interest in seeing a 4th Avatar.

Cameron should be doing more interesting films in his remaining years IMO. The dude is no spring chicken.

@EscapeMySight - how can you say that rottne tomatoes critics and reviews love avatar movies that means you should to people on here are sheep for reviews rotten tomaotes and critics live there life choices by them if you don’t like avatar movies based on reviews movie scores that means your thinking for yourself not part of stupid sheep heard

@dragon316 - Well, I didn't say I didn't like Avatar. I thought the first one was pretty good back in 09. I really didn't think they should have done a second one / didn't think a second one was needed, but I actually ended up enjoying Avatar 2.

Avatar 3 on the other hand I thought was a waste of time. Basically the second movie rehashed. Completely pointless.

Now, lots of people do love them, and thats great. They obviously want Avatar 4, 5 and 6.. But I personally think its a waste of time. Cameron isn't young any more. He's a great film maker and in my opinion, he should be working on more interesting projects.

I do think they should do one more that serves as a big finale. They definitely left it open. I liked Fire and Ash more than Way of Water.

I couldn't even finished fire and ash in one sitting. That's how repetitive the story has become. Couldn't careless about the characters

@Gabimaru - I enjoyed the first 2 movies, but the 3rd one was just a repeat of movie 2. Never mind Fire and Ash, more like Fire and Ass.

HeavyMetal4Life - 8/6/2026, 4:03 PM
@KineticAce - yup agreed. 4 already has a large part filmed, so its a no brainer for him to do that one. I imagine once he gets back into the 4th he will want to see his vision fulfilled by finishing with a finale 5th movie. And then he will go off and do other movies (or maybe squeeze another film in between the 4th and 5th).

havent seen the 3rd, dont remember the 2nd, these are just eye candy with the same story. maybe someday if i want to veg out and drink for 3hrs of eye candy ill watch the 3rd one. wish he would do an original movie before he's done. T2 and Aliens are 2 of my ALL TIME Fav movies.... wheres that guy
XenoJazz
XenoJazz - 8/6/2026, 4:58 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - He's been gone since Titanic. I love titanic but he started to get really soft. He's even admitted if he could do T2 all over again it wouldn't have as many guns or violence. He's one of the greatest to ever do it but I think he's kinda done everything he's ever wanted so at this point he's like what else?? 🤷
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 8/6/2026, 7:45 PM
@XenoJazz - yikes.. I can't imagine T2 but all pussified that would suck.

Idk if he has anything left to give us but I hope he has 1 last gem for us

I wonder how his new "Terminator" script is coming along and if he's planning on directing?
I've always like the idea of a Terminator traveling back in time to kill Sarah's parents. She was what? 21 in 1984? So it could take place somewhere in 1963? 1962? Idk, that could be kinda cool.
Timerider
Timerider - 8/6/2026, 5:48 PM
@BiffDitko - he wants to do AI stuff, basically the origin of Skynet, he’s done with Sarah, Kyle and John Connor. He likes the AI concept and a big computer taking over human decision making. Basically everything that Kyle told Sarah in the car. There will be no Kyle or Sarah, that story has been told.
BiffDitko
BiffDitko - 8/6/2026, 8:57 PM
@Timerider - That works too, but having TIME TRAVEL be the main focus of a film series gives a writer some leeway if they want to use it.

There's definitely closure at the end of the third movie so this could end where it did. He's been doing this for 18 years. Move on dude, everybody liked you for how original you were, and the new ideas you brought to the table over and over

Remember when people were having psychological issues wanting to go back to Pandora?

Avatar was released in December 2009, the intense desire of some audience members to live on Pandora became a widespread psychological phenomenon known as Post-Avatar Depression Syndrome (PADS) or "Avatar Blues." Fans reported feeling deep sadness, emptiness, and disillusionment with the real world after the immersive 3D experience ended.

I like the avatar franchise, great escapism at its most superficial. Fire & ash was a tad disappointing but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. A fourth film is supposed to take place back on Earth so narratively it would be radically different.
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 8/6/2026, 6:44 PM
I hope the franchise continues but I think this is a better move. Dude is getting up there and I think he’s got more to give than Avatar until he dies which if he does 2 more could conceivably be most of that time (hopefully not)

TheVisionary25 - 8/6/2026, 6:48 PM
@Ha1frican - it would be interesting to see the Avatar franchise is someone else’s hands perhaps like a Gareth Edwards for example.
