AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Passes $1.3 Billion Globally Following 0% Third-Week Domestic Drop

Avatar: The Way of Water recently became the fastest movie of 2022 to pass the $1 billion mark, and it looks like James Cameron's sci-fi sequel intends to continue breaking records well into 2023.

Despite a slightly lower than predicted opening weekend, The Way of Water has been raking it in since hitting theaters on December 16, and has now amassed a mighty $1.379B worldwide. $957M of that total came from overseas territories, which means the movie should pass $1 billion internationally by close of business today.

Perhaps even more impressively, The Way of Water took in $63.4M in its third weekend domestically - a mighty, near unprecedented 0% drop from its second weekend!

At this rate, the sequel will surely hit $2 billion before the end of its theatrical run. As things stand, it's the 15th biggest movie of all time globally, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

@regularmovieguy - in my defense, I never doubted it would make the big bucks (although it does surprise me at what rate it's making the big bucks)

@tmp3 - yeah. So many of the complaints are ridiculous in retrospect. Yeah, the story is weak. But avatar has always been about the exploration of this fascinating world, with the story just being an excuse for that.

Great news my favorite movie in 2022. Avatar: The Way of Water my entire family loved this movie. I already saw it twice might be a third 5 Stars out of 5 Stars bring on the third.

This was the absolute favorite movie of 2022 of every single member of my family under the age of 14.

It would have been for the rest of us maybe if it had a good plot, better dialog, & some character development to go along with all of the pretty eye candy.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

@Vigor -

What makes you think that?

Of course I saw it. My Grandson wanted to see it.

For me, it was just like Avatar, though not as good.

Again, beautiful visuals with a weak story & dialog. They also could easily have edited at least a half hour out of it to keep everyone awake through the whole thing.

Oh yeah, this movie definitely is gonna join the 2 billion BO club. Although I do think it'll turn a profit before that (even though Cameron suggested otherwise)

tmp3 - 1/2/2023, 10:47 AM
@bkmeijer1 - i have to assume the $2 billion number was break-even when including the budgets of 2+3 (and however much they did on 4), since they shot them all in one go. if that $450m figure is true, profitability probably started after the first billie
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/2/2023, 10:50 AM
@tmp3 - I wouldn't be surprised if that's true. And if that's for just one movie + marketing, it may have started turning a profit just now.

If both movies cost around 450m and when marketing is included, I can see why Cameron would say it would only break even at 2 billion.

Does not need 2 billion to break even. Deadline, thr and the Hollywood reporter have reported on it.

It broke even at 1.1billion.

Rule of thumb is 2.5 times it's budget to get the break even number😎

It will cross 1 billion easy."

"While I think Avatar does get to a billion, I don't think it beats Top Gun Maverick."

AmazingFILMporg - 12/10/2022, 11:55 AM
"It will beat top gun 2 because it has china. In China alone it made 200 million.
It will pass top gun 2. Willing to bet if you want🤝🙂?"

AmazingFILMporg - 12/10/2022, 12:11 PM
"ok bet. I say avatar 2 will beat top gun at the ww boxoffice and
you say top gun 2 will remain the biggest film of 2022.

If I win you have to say TDK isn't that great and Batman and Robin has more
rewatch value. You also have to say Nolan will never come back to Batman and
George Clooney is the best Batman of all time."

Forthas - 12/10/2022, 12:20 PM

"If I win

You will have to say Zack Snyder is the greatest director that ever lived,
Warner Brothers is the best studio and makes Marvel look like dumb stupid
amateurs, and Henry Cavill is the greatest Superman of ALL TIME!"
