Last month, Avatar returned to theaters with remastered 4K visuals. Fans of the 2009 blockbuster jumped at the chance to see the movie in 3D again, while for others, it was their first time seeing James Cameron's magnum opus on the big screen.
As you can probably imagine, there's now more online discourse surrounding the sci-fi epic than we've heard for some time, hence why the Screen Junkies team is now taking aim at the record-breaking hit (which sits just shy of $3 billion at the worldwide box office) in a new Honest Trailer. Needless to say, they don't hold back, though it's all meant to be in good fun.
One big talking point is the Na'vi ponytails that allow the aliens to connect with each either and pretty much everything on Pandora. In hindsight, that is a little bizarre, though we'd argue that it works within the context of the movie. Regardless, all signs point to that being something Avatar: The Way of Water continues to explore when it's released this December.
Elsewhere, Sam Worthington's mostly expressionless Jake Sully is targeted, and the trailer reminds us that the character was very nearly played by Avengers: Endgame star Chris Evans.
Aside from that, they mostly make the expected comparisons to other movies that we've spent over a decade hearing. This is still an entertaining watch, even if it does feel like they're struggling to make any points that haven't been discussed ad nauseam (we're sure similar points will be made again when Avatar: The Way of Water is finally shared with the world).
Written and directed by Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.
The film was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and ended up being nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Ultimately, Avatar won three Oscars for Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects.
