James Cameron Told Fox Exec To "Get The F*ck" Out Of His Office When He Pleaded For Shorter AVATAR Run-Time

Legendary director James Cameron continues to entertain us all by recalling his clashes with the studio over the first Avatar movie, and this latest anecdote is a doozy...

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: There aren't many directors out there who can completely shut a studio down when they ask for something, but James Cameron is one of them!

The legendary filmmaker recently recalled clashing with 20th Century Fox when they asked him to trim down the first Avatar's run-time by removing a key flying sequence, and he's now elaborated on how volatile the situation actually became during a new interview with GQ (via SFFGazette.com).

Cameron revealed that he was approached by one particular exec (he declined to name names) with a “stricken cancer-diagnosis expression," who pleaded with him to trim the film's lengthy run-time in the build-up to its theatrical release.

“I said something I’ve never said to anybody else in the business,” Cameron began.  ”I think this movie is going to make all the f*cking money. And when it does, it’s going to be too late for you to love the film. The time for you to love the movie is today. So I’m not asking you to say something that you don’t feel, but just know that I will always know that no matter how complimentary you are about the movie in the future when it makes all the money.”

At this, Cameron says the nameless exec "flipped out and went bug shit on me," so he "told him to get the f*ck out of my office."

Of course, the movie did make "all the f*cking money." It's still the highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office (unadjusted for inflation), and Cameron will be hoping his upcoming sequel The Way of Water - which is a good 30 mins longer than its predecessor - will be able to match its success.

The Way of Water will have to turn a massive profit just to break even, but we'll find out if audiences are still willing to turn up in droves for another trip to Pandora when the movie hits theatres on December 10.

By conventional wisdom, Avatar was too long. Somehow though, it capture the public’s interest enough to be an exception. I’d be shocked if Way of the Water can achieve the same thing.

For those wishing flop status on this movie, unfortunately i think it will happen.

not because it doesn't make money, but not enough to be the third of 4th highest grossing in this market at the moment.

I mean Spider-Man no way home didn't get to 2 bill, so i'm not expecting this to reach 2.05 to take 3rd or 4th place to even break even, so to turn a profit???? eh? so by that it may flop. But will still get to 1 billion i feel.

Here's his quote from the article.

The Way of Water was expensive to make—How expensive? “Very [frick]ing,” according to Cameron, who told me he’d informed the studio that the film represented “the worst business case in movie history.” In order to be profitable, he’d said, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

I've still never watched the first one. Not even 5 minutes of it. All I've seen is what was in trailers. I never even walked into a friends' house when it was on or anything, which is surprising considering all my friends saw it and liked it.

I don't know. I just had less than zero interest in it.

@CorndogBurglar - @CorndogBurglar - For the first one, as a movie in general it's nothing special unless you’re only invested in how they filmed it and the VFX at the time, but as a cinema going experience, it truly blew me away. It’s still the only time I felt truly immersed in the 3d on an IMAX screen, nothing has matched that since then or even before. It really was one to enjoy on the best screen you could get to, which is why It probably still made money on those re-releases.

I'm not expecting the story on this one to be anything special either, but I imagine it will be another stellar experience in the theatre. That's the only way to really appreciate it I feel. Watching it at home is just a reminder of how good that was. If you're watching at home for the first viewing, I would agree then that it's probably not that big a deal.

@CorndogBurglar - "I never even walked into a friends' house when it was on or anything"
LOL, that's because the movie has zero rewatchability. I don't know anyone that wanted to watch it again after they saw it in theaters.

@TheFinestSmack - I mean my friends liked it. But that's the consensus I think. Outside of the theatre it's nothing special.

@UniqNo - Yeah, I think that was the thing. It was amazing to see the effects and everything in 3D in a theatre. When it hit DVD it was a big deal because 3D TV's were the new thing. But I even withba 3D tv I don't think it would have captured the theatre experience.

@CorndogBurglar - 100% agree, they most definitely don't. Those TV’s and curved screens just faded into the background after a year or 2.

I won’t lie though, based on my experience of the first one, this movie already got my money, opening night, biggest screen in the UK, IMAX 3D, I’m sure I’m going to have a good time and that’s what the experience is really about, I’d say give it a chance, but appreciate it’s not to everyone’s taste, especially for 3 hours.

@UniqNo - @UniqNo - Curved TVs not taking a bite out of the market was a damn shame. The 4k curved 8000 Samsung series TVs had some of the most astounding colour balance and depth and frame rate/resolutions ever produced; it still stand up amazingly well to this day.

When the TV market didn't bite on the technology, they ported all of it strictly to gaming and PC monitors.

To this day I strongly believe that curved TVs were far less of a gimmick than the 3d TVs were.

@CorndogBurglar - To stop by to say, I've not seen the movie, not even 5 minutes of it, because I simply don't want to, just letting you all know. That's a little odd. I've suggested it's a good movie, but if you're not going to see it anyway, the whole purpose of this thread, with me or otherwise, is rather moot.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - Yeah, I was quite interested in them to be honest and when it came time to get one I was in between that or a 4k screen at a bigger size with quite a nice discount...I went 4k but only lbecause I'm quite often on the Xbox with Halo lol.

I saw samsung also just released that huge 2.2hdmi curved monitor that also goes landscape.... a bit too expensive for me but also just recently purchased the 28inch odyssey g7 in 28 inches. That's a hell of a monitor for the price it is these days.

I've never met anyone that "wants" to talk about Avatar. Everyone's seen it, but nobody cares. The only conversation I ever heard about it was if the 3D made you puke or not. It wasn't a very good. People just waned to experience the 3D. And 3D outside of amusement parks and theaters hasn't really been the revolution that Cameron thought it would be. He's just trying to one-up George Lucas. He wants to create a better Star Wars. And apparently, he though ripping off Ferngully movies was the way to do it. If this next Avatar is like the Ferngully sequel, I will laugh.

MisterDoctor217
MisterDoctor217 - 11/23/2022, 9:20 AM
@UnderBelly -

Doesn’t affect me, but some people like James Cameron need to be taken down a notch, just because he made one of the best action sequels of all time doesn’t mean everything he does is artistic genius, not. Every director will come out with a masterpiece, but somehow James Cameron thinks everything he touches is gold, and for a person with a lot of money to feel invencible, sometimes that’s not good.
He’s not evil or anything like that obviously, but you don’t know how his ego has affected other people in the work place.
This article is a clear example, yes it was an exec, but how do we know he hasn’t fired crew members for less ?
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 11/23/2022, 9:29 AM
@Humperdoo - What’s wrong in your life that you want this movie to bomb? Legitimate question.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 11/23/2022, 9:45 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - He's literally got nothing to loose and has kind of earned his right to be that egotistical. It's not a good quality in a person I'll admit, but he makes good movies. He also spent the studio's money on a project that he envisioned by himself. It's already a win for him especially as you'll be coming back saying the same thing when the third one is coming around and flop or not, that one's coming.

It just seems like wasted energy to wish negativity on something that doesn't affect you especially if you haven't got any personal or extended stake in his craft or work practices.

Wanting someone like a politician to fail, that i get as it affects you, but a director of a sci fi movie?? Eh ok.
