The Next Four AVATAR Movies Have Release Dates (Again)

Believe it or not, Avatar was released EIGHT years ago and after countless stops and starts, the next four instalments of the franchise have been given release dates. Hit the jump for details...

James Cameron has been talking about those Avatar sequels for close to a decade, but it now appears as if they're finally going to become a reality. The first movie revolutionised 3D filmmaking and grossed $2.7 billion worldwide making it the biggest movie ever; not even Star Wars: The Force Awakens could top it last year. So, when exactly are the next FOUR Avatar sequels now set to hit the big screen?

Avatar 2 is coming on December 18th, 2020, Avatar 3 follows on December 17th, 2021, Avatar 4 will then come a few years later on December 20th, 2024, and the fifth instalment drops on December
19th 2025. It's likely that James Cameron will shoot these back to back, though this is quite the delay considering the fact that the first of these follow-ups was originally coming to theaters next year!

It's interesting that Fox has taken all these Christmas release dates, especially as Star Wars has held that slot for the past couple of years. Still, if Disney and Lucasfilm are starting to move them to May with Han Solo onwards, the two franchises won't have to go head to head. Are you guys excited?

Wow. 3 more years. Okay, James Cameron.

I thought these movies were basically made by the way he spoke of the completion of the scripts and prep work before...

Why work on this, rather than another original film, or prehaps the oppurtunity to direct terminator or aliens again.

Why is a movie that's already started production and begins filming in August not coming out until December 2020. I understand these movies require a lot of post production, but 3 years?

@tazmaniak - did you hear James Gunn say that one scene in GOTG V2 took 800+ VFX tests before they got it looking perfect?.. well, this film, is like 90% CGI.. thats why it takes so long. Rendering CGI and testing takes a bloody long time to do.

@tazmaniak - This is a social experiment, that's what; a ruse, a red herring! -to guage the level of public interest!
It HAS to be!

Considering the first and 2nd film will be 11 years apart, I really hope Cameron has few tricks up his sleeve to conjure up some type of excitement for a franchise most people have forgotten about

Can't believe it's been eight years since the first one came out.. dang. It honestly still stands as the best 3D movie I've ever seen in theaters though.

Better stick this time. Also James Cameron is a weirdo. Putting all of his effort into nothing but Avatar. I remember the old days where his filmography looked like this.

@MasterMix - I'd love to see him tackle another sci fi horror film.

He should adapt Blue Gender
