Last night, we learned that Tom Rothman would be producing Dreamworks/20th Century Fox's upcoming sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse, based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson. Steven Spielberg is set to direct, with Chris Hemsworth (Marvel's The Avengers) and Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises) said to be in talks for lead roles in the film. Now, Variety reports that British actor Ben Whishaw - who will soon be seen in Warner Bros.' Cloud Atlas and as 'Q' in the next James Bond film, Skyfall - is being eyed for the role of the hacker 'Lurker'. While Whishaw has yet to receive an official offer, Dreamworks have had him on their wish list for the role since the casting process began. Robopocalypse is expected to begin production in early 2013, and is set to hit theaters April 25th, 2014. Below is a plot synopsis for the story:

In the future, robots have been created to serve Mankind. Archos, the 14° version of an advanced Artificial Intelligence developed by the U.S. government, continuously deleted for displaying hostility towards humans, escapes from being destroyed and soon becomes a virus, downloading itself into every piece of A.I.-controlled technology in the planet, leading to a worldwide robot uprising where the humans caught in the chaos struggle to survive.

I thought Lurker was supposed to be a lard-o...but Winshaw will be a good fit. Nerdy and British.

Trying to figure out who Anne Hathaway will play, too young to be the Senator. Maybe the soldier on the Squad, but she was supposed to be Native American.

Chris Hemsworth works for the main character, it's pretty similar to the role in Red Dawn, actually.

Speilburg should stick to the big sci-fi stuff. It think it works with his style better than the war dramas. 'cept Saving Private Ryan

Never read the book but this could be pretty epic if made right.

Whishaw was great in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. I recommend to watch that film. He stars in the film with Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman.

As soon as I read the title my mind went to him playing Lurker. Seems like a good fit and it would be awesome if they did cast him.

Sounds like he's stealing the entire backstory of Terminator.

@DrRockit13 exactly! Basically the rise of Skynet! So it's a remake of T3! Great!

Wow, Spielberg's picking off of three big franchises: Avengers, Nolan's Bat-films, and James Bond.

Too bad the story's just an I, Robot ripoff.
