A reboot of classic sci-fi/horror drama series The X-Files is said to have come close to development several times over the past few years, and original series' creator Chris Carter has now claimed that a new show based on the wildly popular property is in the works - with Ryan Coogler on board!
During an interview with On The Coast With Gloria Macarenko, Carter revealed that the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director was set to "remount" The X-Files.
"I just spoke to a young man - Ryan Coogler - who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast," he said. "So he's got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory."
The X-Files originally aired on Fox from 1993-2001, before being revived at the network for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018. The show starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who found themselves investigating strange, unexplained and usually supernatural or extraterrestrial cases.
There were also two movies released in 1998 and 2008, but neither proved to be very popular with fans or critics.
Details on this new show are few and far between, but it's assumed that Coogler would develop (and possibly direct) the project under his five-year overall deal with Walt Disney Television, of with 20th Century TV is a part.
We're not sure if the plan is to bring Mulder and Scully back, but both Duchovny and Anderson have indicated that they're done with the characters at this stage.
