BOX OFFICE: MOCKINGJAY - PART 2 Holds Off Slew Of New Releases Over Thanksgiving

The final instalment in The Hunger Games franchise may be lagging behind its predecessors, but it's still making plenty of money at the US box office. Enough, at least, to hold off the two big newcomers in Creed & The Good Dinosaur over the Thanksgiving weekend...

Despite being in its second week of release, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 reigned supreme over the Thanksgiving weekend, pulling in a total of $75.75M over 5 days. However, this feat was somewhat marred by the fact that it's by far the least successful Hunger Games movie so far, and the only installment not to pass $200 million domestically during its second weekend.

Nevertheless, it held off plenty of new releases. Disney/Pixar's The Good Dinosaur scored $55.6M over the same 5-day stretch. However, with a 3-day total of $39.2M, it was the lowest opening for a Pixar movie since 1998's A Bug's Life. The movie has so-far received good (but not great) reviews, and was most likely overshadowed by The Hunger Games in the eyes of audiences.

Elsewhere, Creed helped stage a modest resurgence for the Rocky series, posting a 5-day cume of $42.6M, and a franchise-high total of $30.1M over its first three days. The movie stole plenty of headlines, after picking up a remarkable 92% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Talk about a comeback for star Michael B. Jordan after the debacle that was Fant4stic eh?

Speaking of debacles, Victor Frankenstein bombed to the tune of $3.4M. The less said about that, the better. Here's your Top 5 for the 5-day Thanksgiving period. Did you see any of these movies this weekend? Let me know what you thought of them in the comments below!

1) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 - $75.75 million
2) The Good Dinosaur - $55.6 million
3) Creed - $30.1 million
4) Spectre - $18.2 million
5) The Peanuts Movie - $13.6 million

rocky 7 is shit. he has cancer now? i guess brain damage in rocky 5 was not enough.

also creed should not have had rocky in it at all. now all the sequels to it will just be more rocky movies weather sly is in them or not.

I really only go to the movies to see sci-fi these days with the way they do special effects but Creed was well worth the watch. Sly should get a nod for best supporting actor. They worked well together, MBJ reminds me of a young Denzel when he acts. He is very comfortable in his roles, no overacting. you guys can have the Twilight Games or Hunger Resergents for all I care!

A "modest resurgence" for the Rocky series? 42 million dollars, the highest opening for a Rocky movie ever, massive critical acclaim, and Oscar talk. The movie will have long legs.

I'm so glad that Star Wars stole much of the hype from Hunger Games. Thank god this shit is over. Creed was fantastic.

Creed has a lot of humor in it so if you are anti-humor you probably won't like it...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Creed was fantastic. It dabbled in the cliché from time to time throughout the film, but the direction was simply amazing. Coogler is phenomenal and I cannot wait to see what he will do after this.

Creed, what a fantastic movie. Anyone, man or woman, who saw it and has lost someone they love (family or friend) to cancer must of almost or totally cried during this film. I wasnt ready for that. I really wasn't. I almost lost it like 2 times in that film. Great screenplay and even better cinematography. Especially the fight scenes. Even the training montage was excellent and shot very well. Yes, this could be right up there for movie of the year.

I loved Creed, I wish it done better, but being #3 given the competition is a big deal in itself.
