BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM May Struggle To Hit #2 This Weekend As DESPICABLE ME 2 Dominates
Despicable Me 2 looks set to retain the #1 spot this weekend at the North American box office, while Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim may find itself struggling to take second place thanks to stiff competition from the critically panned Grown Ups sequel. Read on for details!
Despite being arguably one of the biggest action movies of the summer, it appears as if Pacific Rim will finish the weekend somewhere around the $40 million mark. However, with Despicable Me 2 set for a a second weekend gross of $48 million, the Guillermo del Toro helmed movie may end up finding itself battling for second place with Grown Ups 2. While it is currently doing a little better than expected, analysts are struggling to come up with anything definite, especially after World War Z exceeded everyone's expectations a few weeks back. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, "Some believe the 3D sci-fi epic, from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., could gross in the mid-$40 million range for the weekend, though most box-office experts believe it will top out at between $35 million and $40 million, a so-so number considering the tentpole's $190 million-plus budget." It so far seems to be doing quite well overseas, so be sure to stay tuned to CBM this weekend for all the box office updates as and when we get them.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
