BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Takes $3.6M At Late Night Thursday And Friday Midnight Showings
Despite some naysayers predicting that Pacific Rim would be yet another big budget flop this year, the Guillermo del Toro helmed monsters versus robots movie has exceeded expectations by earning over $3.6 million at late night Thursday and Friday midnight showings.
Tracking is currently all over the place for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, but World War Z was proof of just how unreliable that can be after it far exceeded expectations and quickly became a box office hit. As of right now, it appears as if Pacific Rim is set to perform exactly the same after taking an equal amount of money - $3.6 million - at late shows on Thursday and midnight screenings on Friday. 3D and IMAX may help increase its opening weekend cume, although it faces potentially stiff competition from Growns-Ups 2. Pacific Rim has so far opened at #1 in all 7 Asian markets.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
