Bryan Singer To Reboot Battlestar Galactica?

The guy who ruined the Superman reboot is going to reboot BSG.

According to HitFix, Universal appears to be on the verge of engaging Bryan Singer to produce and maybe direct a new Battlestar Galactica feature film. Quite a surprise, huh?

You may recall that before the Ron Moore TV series of recent years, Singer was working on a pilot for a reboot of the show himself (some Cylon concept art from their efforts is at the head of this post). That one was halted by the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 after the Sci-Fi network became sensitive to similarities between the planned plot and real-life tragedy. Would Singer look to return to a similar storyline here? I think we can be pretty certain his film won’t be in any way tied to the recent series.

McWeeny is rather skeptical that Singer would sign up to direct a film based upon a premise still so fresh in the public consciousness, but I’m not so doubtful. Would Universal really be the driving force here? I’d expect a conservative cautious studio to take some convincing that there was money here. Or maybe they just want some of that Star Trek dollar?

If Singer cares about this film as much as his history with the Galactica concept would suggest, I would not be at all surprised to see him take on as much control as possible. So while there’s every chance he won’t direct, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it at all. After all, "Superman Returns" did fly in while "Smallville" was actually on the air.

This is almost certainly the same project that Peter blogged about in February, possibly a little changed. At that time it seemed that the new movie would be tied in to the 1978 series and that original producer Glen Larson would be producing and working on the script. I’m guessing Singer was in orbit at that time, and just that nobody caught on.

It seems, from where I’m standing, that there’s a core fan-base behind the recent Battlestar Galactica; yet, across the public at large just a vague awareness. This shouldn’t prevent a new version, of course. But I’d also expect it to create some minor confusion. If nothing else, it could ‘mistakenly’ shift a few copies of the recent DVDs to those who fall for the Singer movie.

One of the useful links in the HitFix article was to an interview from the unofficial Battlestar companion with Tom De Santo, Singer’s co-producer on the aborted 2001 series. He explains just how they would have tied in with the original series and, interestingly enough, it would have been a straight sequel with, for example, Dirk Benedict coming back to reprise the role of Starbuck. Now… they won’t try that again, will they? No… of course not… right?

I really like "Battlestar Galactica" but I didn't really like "Superman Returns." He did a good job with the first two X-men, so who knows if this will be good.

Why even think of doing a reboot of something that was so successfully rebooted so recently! I think it will never happen! This new seems even more ridiculous than the Buffy Reboot!! Unnessesary and irritating!

Nice article though!!

Answer@ I agree, a reboot of a reboot is stupid. There's gotta be plenty of other projects singer could do. For crying out loud there's a DVD movie coming out and another series. At least wait til that one is done

If Singer does this i will hunt him down, gouge out his eyeballs, and skull [frick] him to death.

Let me ask you a question Mr Watchtower31 where do you get your balls big enough to say Singer ruined Superman? You must be one of those people that watches a movie like Transformers and says wow look at all the pretty explosions. It was a character driven story, like Hulk, watchmen, and Dark Knight. Singer is among the elite at what he does, end of story.

Battlestar Galactica (of recent) was such a perfect series. you can't mess with that. i watched it in 2 and 1/2 weeks, i couldn't stop. It rivals The Sopranos.

If you are going to reboot anything, reboot "Reboot"

@ Ror You have to come across the Pond 1st buddy to find Singer.

BattleStar G. show on SciFi was great by itself. But what kind of movie would it be. There isnt' much mythos on it to explore to my knowledge anyway. Feel free to correct me it Iam wrong.

They should just leave a great series in peace. Singer shouldnt try to reboot anything.

I agree with everyone who thinks that there is NO reason at all to do a reboot of BSG! The show was just done over and that reboot of BSG did great! I don't even think I could watch a BSG movie unless it had the cast from the most recent BSG that was on the sci-fi channel. It is just plain stupid to try to reboot this show or to make a movie of it, just like it is rediculous to make a Buffy movie w/out the characters from the popular TV series or Joss Whedon!

Reboot this, reboot that. What is Hollywood going to do 10 years from now?

we should be on our 4th reboot of Halloween, 3rd spiderman reboot in talks, Watchmen reboot....

I guess no one is creative anymore...I hope by that time we could have a good D and D movie, or Forgotten Realms, maybe Hollywood would realize there is good material there to ca$h in on.....

this doesn't sound like the worst idea

I mean, if the original series doesn't ruin the new one for you then how would a one off re-imagining movie ruin it. Battlestar we're not going to see anything new involving that ship or that crew.

Plus what I think everyone is forgetting is that this would probably take a few years to finish, it's just talk at the moment, so who knows, when this is out in 2013 you may all be well up for it.

Is this going to reboot things back to the original 1978 series? If it does, I'm all for it! I absolutely LOVED the original series as a kid, but I hated the Sci-Fi series for numerous reasons that would take too long to go into right now. This is some potentially wonderful news. I hope that Singer can bounce back to the form that made the first two X-Men films so good.

Is Singer actively campaigning to be the next Uwe Boll? SRSLY, I'd love to see more BSG, but as has been mentioned already, the series wrapped up neatly and any movie now would be just a 2 hr series episode a la ST: First Contact. That's not the legacy I would want for BSG and Ron Moore.

The new BSG was simply the greatest sci fi show ever made and a strong contender for the greatest show ever made period. I would only put The Wire ahead of it personally. A reboot of a rebooted show it probably the most retarded thing i have ever heard.

NO to Singer! HELL NO to Singer!! He trashed Superman. His X-Men contributions were GOD-AWFUL! As far as I'm concerned, he should be banned from having ANYTHING to do with comic books, sci-fi or fantasy!

CorndogBurglar - 8/13/2009, 9:00 AM
@ ror agreed, BSG was the only show that got me to sit in front of the tv on a regular basis. i'm terrible at getting into shows, i can just never find a way to get myself in front of the tv when they're on...now true blood is my BSG, lol, now thats a good show!

@ logan

i didn't think ALL his contributions to the x-franchise was terrible, but i agree with his superman movie, i hated that "thing"

No Battlestar Galctica reboot movie, just get Bryan Singer to make a X-Men 4 & 5 back to back for release in 2013 and 2014, make a interconnecting plot between the two movies with Mr Sinister and Apocalypse as bad guys, bring back Cyclops, include Havok, Polaris and Emma Frost, make a Days of future past movie with a new director in 2017, Magneto prequel in 2018, X-Men first class prequel in 2019 and then develop a trilogy out of this directed by Steven Spielberg with Shadow King, The Brotherhood and Hellfire Club as bad guys. There, complete X-franchise, end of story!

NEVER DO A REBOOT OF A REBOOT.ITS A BAD IDEA..YOU CAN ONLY REBOOT A REBOOT IF THE FIRST REBOOT SUCKED..LIKE DRAGONBALLZ OR STREETFIGHTER,BATMAN FRANCHISE WAS IN THE PITTS TILL NOLAN RAISED IT FROM THE CRAP IT WAS LEFT IN..NEVER DO A REBOOT UNLESS THE LAST ONE WAS CRAP..BATTELSTAR WAS PRETTY AWSOME, IF YOU HAVE FAITH EVERYONE WILL LOVE IT ITS A BIG RISK.2 CRAPPY MOVIES IN A ROW AND YOU RISK YOUR CAREER,UNLESS YOUR KEVIN SMITH,HE'S GOT FAN LOVE EVEN IF HALF HIS MOVIES WERE SO SO.BUT HONESTLLY, THE ONLY THING KEEPING HIM AFLOAT IS THE FACT HE MADE 2 COOL XMEN FILMS..I DUNNO.

@ SirPrize I couldnt agree with you more brother.

Shouldnt Synger be directing shit like Steele Magnolias or movies like Apt Pupil or something that doesnt have to do with comic books?
Valkyrie Sucked Ass, Superman Returns was terrible, and the X-Men movies are a joke.

Some one should tell him to go do some gay porn or something .....but please stay away from the comic book genre.........we dont need him.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/13/2009, 11:22 AM
Gay porn! hahahaha, because he's gay! hahah, i get it!!!

Look, Superman Returns was a good movie..it may not have been what a lot of COMIC SMASH fans wanted to see, but i think Singer did a great job. Same with the X movies. "No costumes waaaaaa, no original team, waaaaaaaa" Get over it, the acting, story and direction in those movies was great. Not what you wanted to see? Tough. Doesn't mean they are bad movies.
