Cool Koba Concept Art - DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had a huge opening weekend, pulling in over $70M. One of the reasons for the film's success was Toby Kebbell's motion-capture-performance as Koba. Come see some alternate looks for this terrifying ape.

The website, Film Sketchr, conducted an interview with the very talented conceptual artist, Jerad S. Marantz ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2"). The interview also features concept art that Jerad designed for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow and Grimm season 3.
Film Sketchr: You worked on the first film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." What was it like going back to that world and picking it up years later?

Jerad Marantz: It was great to come back to the Apes franchise. After working on the first film and seeing what an incredible movie it was I was so excited to start working on the second one. Though I spent a lot of time on many of the different ape designs my absolute favorite was Koba. Designing Koba was one of those rare experiences where I got the design through in the first pass. Many times I work on the show there is a lot of back-and-forth in the design process. You submit an image and then you get a lot of notes. This was not the case with the Koba design. In the very first pass I got the character through and the design went straight to Weta. That's only happened two other times in my career but never on such a big blockbuster film. Coming back to the character for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was such an honor being able to take him further.

I've been a bit of a shut in these past several days and haven't had time yet to see the film. It's getting really good reviews and as a fan I can't wait. I did pick up the art of book and was really excited to see a couple of my images in there.

It's very rare that you get to be a part of such an incredible project. I can't wait to see what they do for the third film. (Click here for the full interview)

Awesome flick! Its good when a sequel can match or exceed the first film. Koba was fleshed out very well and kinda stole the show. If you haven't see this, go, you'll enjoy it!

Caesar was awesome in this too. Every development made sense and this feels like it moved the Planet of the Apes idea/concept forward. I also noticed a lot of symbolism/metaphors the director used to convey the transition of power in this flick. That was a plus too!

The other day I was just wondering if these newer PotA films would serve as being prequels to the older films but I'm honestly starting to think that they may go into an entirely different direction with this franchise. Koba was the best thing I loved about this film.

I like how they sort of hinted at Koba being a straight-up villain at the end of Rise. First Caesar allows him to kill Will's boss by pushing the helicopter over the bridge, then Koba attacks Will in the forest before Caesar stops him. I have to think those two instances were included with an eye on the role Koba would play in Dawn.

Speaking of which, finally saw it yesterday and it was phenomenal! Didn't quite blow me away as much as I'd hoped, but a solid 7/10. Easily in the top 5 best movies this year.
