It Sounds Like TERMINATOR: GENISYS Might Not Be A Box Office Flop After All

US audiences may not have taken to Terminator Genisys but the blockbuster sci-fi sequel is starting to find its feet abroad! A new report has surfaced, claiming that, thanks to its performance in China, the movie may not be a box office flop after all...

It's fair to say the ludicrously-titled Terminator Genisys didn't go down particularly well with US audiences, flopping at the domestic box office to the modest tune of $89.2 million (so far) - and provoking plenty of ire from both critics and fans of the franchise respectively. However, it seems the Alan Taylor helmed movie has been received much better overseas - specifically, in China.

Forbes are reporting that the sci-fi sequel opened with an impressive
$27.4 million there, ranking as the country's fourth highest opening day ever. It's becoming increasingly clear that China's a key market for blockbusters, and the universal appeal of star Arnold Schwarzenegger is what likely prompted this remarkable performance. Forbes have speculated that by the time it finishes it's theatrical run, Genisys could potentially rake in a very respectable $450-500m worldwide.

Those sort of numbers might just be enough to warrant a sequel. Are you happy to see Terminator Genisys performing so well, or are you no longer interested in this franchise? As always, be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the comments below!

Look how my of them went to see transformers 57. Only disappointing thing about late releases in China is it takes forever for a pirate copy to appear online.

Awesome! Terminator Genisys was a pretty shallow movie, but it WAS fun to watch, and it was a distinct pleasure to see Arnold Schwarzenegger back as a Terminator-- I actually really liked the "Pops" character they created, and his relationship with Sarah was the best thing in the movie.

I'm hoping that, if they DO push through a sequel, they hire a couple of better screenwriters for the second go-round, though... And maybe consider a new Kyle Reese.

Actually, the title is really good, using "Genisys" as an obvious reference to the genesis of the story, AND shows that Skynet intended the launch to be the "genesis" of it's era of domination.

The deliberate misspelling (known to marketing people as "sensational" spelling) has multiple purposes: (1) it identifies the word as a brand name, a la Froot Loops, Netflix, Tumblr, Reddit, Mortal Kombat, etc., (2) the "sys" evokes the word "system" which gives it a tech flavor, and (3) it subtly implies that the new "genesis" of the story would have a few alterations.

Pretty smart.

Should of flopped.

The movie was garbage. The only thing good was Arnie and Clarke trying to bring life into a dull movie.

@DrDoom not a crazy title obviously in the context of knowing about the movie plot and that OS, which by the way most people do not, especially in the States apparently. To them it's a stupid title. Arguably to people who do know it in context, it's still a stupid title, and they should have chosen something else to use for these reasons.

We should cut China some slack. This was the only Hollywood movie they'd been allowed to see since June and is currently the only one they have to choose from.

So the studio finally figured out a way for Genisys to make money- they just needed to prevent it from having to face any competition. (And even with that huge advantage, it's quickly losing steam at the Chinese box office.)

SPOILERS

I think I would've enjoyed it more if they hadn't taken such a lazy approach and made John a Terminator, as well as taking all the "cool" elements from all previous movies and trying to smash it all into this one installment. It was like watching a Terminator hilite reel from previous outings, and they added a new "twist" for the villain.

Didn't hate it. Didn't love it either.

Dude...an amateur YouTube vid with a kid admiring and then shoveling out his navel lint is better than Fant4stic.
