James Cameron Reveals Details On The Avatar Sequels

The highly acclaimed director of Avatar, James Cameron, has revealed that two sequels are currently intended for Christmas 2014 and 2015 releases, respectively.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron said:

"I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas ’14 and ’15 is the current plan."

He also mentions that some familiar faces will return:

"Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form... Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world... I didn’t want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place."

If he comes up with an original story more movies could be good, if he just relies on special effects to hold up a tired story he is just going to rape "his" masterpiece.

This is weird, the night before last I watched Star Trek for the first time, then their was an article about it, then last night I watched Avatar for the first time and there is an article today. Does this make me psychic?

Its old news yes, but only about the sequels happening. We didn't know it was coming out in 2014 and 2015 or that it was shooting back to back. Really nice find Lans, This deserves front page.

I was disappointed in the first one 'cause I was expecting something badass but instead I watched a 2 1/2 hour bore-feast, I really hope that the sequel surpasses the first one.

I thought it was great but none of the other ones will make anything near the first because now we have 3d at home , back when the first came out the only place to see it in 3d was in the theater and I saw it 4 times . I already have a panny 3d plasma and by the time the next one comes out many more people will also . I may not even go see the new ones at the theater which for me and my daughter and popcorn and pop is like 60 bucks , instead I will wait and but the 3d blu for like 30 and watch it as many times as I want .

For some reason I ave this vision of Cameron creating this huge water monster like the Kraken. Or having the whole planet be a living being witha face or some shit.

idk im a little sceptic...as long as mr cameron ups the hell out of the ante and pull some rainbows from his man crease then i'm sure they'll be good...im just not a fan of linking two films like this...it usually always turns out badly (ie matrix and pirates) but im excited to see the sealife and other parts of pandora!

All I'm reading from this guy is

"I'm going to milk this bitch dry! I'm taking a mediocre yet successful movie and bleeding it for every penny. I'm going to be one rich bastard and I don't care how the money comes in! Oh, and if it looks like I'm doing something to help the planet along the way then I guess I'm ok with that. Now where did I park my solid gold Bugatti Veyron?"

@SuspenseSmith - Amen brother! Maybe we'll finally get some "Change" in 2012!

Avatar was ok. It was visually stunning, only saw it in 2D at home, but otherwise boring as hell. The fight scenes were even a little boring. I'll see them but I'll wait like last time.

i really tried to watch this crap and literally got nauseous from his 'great new technological movie breakthrough'!! the CG animation on Nick is better!

and im not gonna set through just another opportunity for cameron to do just another political rant!!

Anyways, I hope they do well with the sequels.

Avatar had a good story - not original but good - good acting, awesome visuals, and fun action? I'll gladly see another couple.

Like intruder said, it's way better than a lot've crap that comes out these days. People are much harder to please these days. Take the sticks out of your asses and enjoy a movie for what it is. :P

avatar kicks ass and all you haters will do nothing better in your lives other than complain about LEGENDS!!! Can't believe so many people hate a man who has contributed immensely to sci fi. Titanic sucked? i'm glad none of ya'll control what is deemed classic in film becuase if it was up to you fools classics like Casablanca, On the Waterfront, and Godfather would be overlooked for crap like Transformers and Iron Man 2.

@suspensesmith- Not seeing Avatar in theaters was a conscious decision, I see movies for the stories and acting, special effects can only make a movie bad, not good. I knew that that was all Avatar was, so I saved my cash. I don't remember why I missed Star Trek.
HarrisonBergeron
HarrisonBergeron - 1/24/2011, 5:31 PM
@fullmetal- First thing, the consensus on CBM is that Transformers and IM2 were crap. Second, All the other movies you listed are classics because of their exceptional stories and acting, neither of which were worth a damn with Avatar. Avatar was purely a special effects movie; at least with Terminator he came up with an original story for his sfx movie.

Englishboy - 1/24/2011, 5:32 PM
am i the only one who thought Avatar was a piece of sh*t? Who cares about awesome 3d thats overdone and overplayed. Wow.. you remade "dances with wolves" but with blue people and 3d glasses. Cameron is full of himself, i mean i hate B movies but love em as much as the next person, but the need to tear into lower budget movies for using 3d tech...f*ck you James Cameron. Hes just pissed that someone else is using that tech but not having millions to back it up. Its horse sh*t to revel in the glory of a redone story but with 3d tech, Cameron has none of my respect. I really dont understand why you guys get your jollies off on this piece of sh*t movie, forgive me but i hate this movie.
...again.."Dances with wolves...with blue people"

@Englishboy...you're dead on. "Avatar" was garbage and I doubt people will line up for sequels. This is simply another case of Cameron's already over-inflated ego on hyper-drive. He'll probably re-re-re-release "Avatar" only this time it will be called "Avatar...The Lost Edition." Mother of God...when will this a-hole's insanity end!
snoopytrek
snoopytrek - 1/24/2011, 7:28 PM
@jose..yes, T2 sucked cause it was too much tongue-n-cheek and not dark enough

@fullmetal...there's no way in God's green earth would titanic be compared to Casablanca or Godfather! or should ever be placed in any category next to these classics!

@englishboy...BRAVO FREAKIN' YES!!

TheOne - 1/24/2011, 7:49 PM
WOW! James Cameron is making 2 sequels to a movie that should have been at best direct to DVD. The first one was a pointless poorly written visual disaster equal to the Joel Schumacher Batman & Robin.

Not to mention it is not a CBM and should not even be discussed on this site or in these forums.
