The Hollywood Reporter has learned that 2x Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz is currently in early talks with 20th Century Fox to star in Alita: Battle Angel, their highly ambitous upcoming film adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's nine-volume '90s manga Battle Angel Alita.

The story takes place in the 26th century and centers around a female cyborg named Alita, who is discovered in a junkyard by a scientist with no memories of her past, save for her lethal martial-arts training. Using her rediscoved skills, she becomes a bounty hunter and hunts down the some of the world's worst criminals. If/when Waltz's deal closes, he'll join Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Death Cure), who has already signed on to play the film's lead protagonist, the cyborg known as Alita. Waltz would portray her mentor Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who discovers her.

Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) is directing the feature while James Cameron (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) & Jon Landau (Titanic) are producing through Cameron's production company Lightstorm Entertainment. According to the report, Fox is aiming for a fall start date with a July 2018 release date in mind.

Can James Cameron just drop Avatar and get back to making other movies because he's a [frick]ing great director. I would just hate for him to be committed to a franchise that is taking so long

Avatar was 15 years in the making. If the sequels take 10 years, it makes sense. Not the biggest fan of Avatar, but I respect the [frick] out of that movie and James Cameron, if he wants a sequel he deserves it.

Dude directed T2, one of my favorite movies of all time. He could whip his dick out for a 3 hour film and I would still say he's a great director.

He's such an amazing actor. This sounds interesting, Rodriguez is hit n miss as a director though. I'm sure his buddy Tarantino put in a good word to Waltz. I still need to watch him in Gilliam's Zero Theorem.
