According to THR, Johnny Depp is in negotiations to star in Transcendence, a big-budget sci-fi flick from Wally Pfister - a man who courted a bit of controversy here on CBM with his anti Avengers comments last week. The site say full plot details are under wraps, but that the story deals with "a man who creates a computer that develops a malevolent awareness.", and that Depp will play "a husband who gets sucked into the computer." Sounds very Tron-like.

There is a fine supporting cast being courted too - apparently Pfister has met with and likes Noomi Rapace as the film's female lead and is considering James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire for the other male lead. Django Unchained's Christoph Waltz also has an offer for a supporting role.

Pfister's longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan will exec-produce the film alongside his wife Emma Thomas. Warner Brothers will distribute, and principal photography is set to begin early next year.

The look of a film aint everything. If you're going to put butts on seats make the subject matter interesting and not hire big name stars to bolster a crap story

Both Tron movies sucked balls, weak plot lines and corny music. If Pfister can take the idea of Tron and make it something actually interesting I say let him go for it.

he should cast Anne Hathaway. Think of the money Alice in Wonderland made.

Those two names next to each other.

This is a good question Spartan! He's horrible.

I'm excited for this film, Wally is one of my favorite cinematographers so I'm intrigued to see his directing skills.

Give me a break, having a legitimate problem with the film is now being anti Avengers?

God forbid someone ASK him about the Avengers and he give his honest opinions

Wow, another Nightmare on Elm Street cast member doing a modern movie? First Langenkamp in Star Trek 2, now this? Oh, wait, it's Wally Pfister and he's directing? [frick] this.
Overrated cinematographer who has friends in the right place gets a chance at his wn movie, because "all he really wants to do is direct" and thewn comes up with some prtetentious, "It's a sci-fi and I'm inspired by 2001" shit? [frick] it no way.

Please tell me he hasn't written the script, too. This thing will be like the film version of a really bad X-Factor/ American Idol audition.
Seriously, he's directing his first feature film with a shit-load of stars, because he was Nolan's cinematographer and he got some strings pulled? This will be really, really bad.
I mean Christopher Doyle is a really good DP and even his films aren't really worth recommending to anyone. And they have actual artistic merit, which I can't see any film by Pfister havng as his shots don't.
Don't get me wrong he's done some admirable photography for Nolan, but any artistic credance there came from his serving the storytelling or from Nolan's directorial decisions. He does capture some magnificence and scale, but I judge artistic merit on more than mere efficiency and practicality and professionalism (he has these in spades), but there's just something missing. He seems ver-trained and is not individual enough.

I hate how anytime someone criticizes a comicbookmovie in any way, that's the first thing the article publishers post instead of their track record in comic book movies. I swear this site just tries to start arguements, its like their instigating in a fight with two people.

But other than that, I think this movie is going to rule.
NostalgicYouth
NostalgicYouth - 10/24/2012, 6:32 PM
Oh and to the people criticizing Wally just because he talked about your precious comicbook movie "The Avengers"; stop whining. He has his own opinion that doesn't mean you should start hating him and everything he does because he feels differently about something you like, a lot of you people hated prometheus, and the dark knight rises; and that's your opinion, but should a person hate you for it? No. So get over it gosh.

Could be good even if it is like Tron, will have to see the trailer

After all two movies can have the same general idea and be totally different

Like that movie with Government agency that had been keeping a square shaped object of alien origin and immense power that had been on earth for while. You know that funny action movie that opened with an attack on a military facility, at some point they needed a scientist to decode a signal and had a big city brawl as the climax. The villain and one of the protagonists were brothers if I recall and at one point the one character updates his look just because.

Because that movie is an awful lot like another movie on the surface but it's Taboo to connect the two even if though both were good fun in my opinion.

...or am I just grasping at straws
