Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse has been something of a mixed bag, and while Godzilla: King of the Monsters received a mostly negative response and underperformed at the box office, the studio understandably moved full steam ahead with Godzilla vs. Kong. That exceeded expectations in the midst of the pandemic, earning an impressive $468 million at the worldwide box office.
The clash between these two behemoths proved to be exactly what moviegoers wanted, and Legendary is clearly committed to its MonsterVerse plans. Back in January, we learned that Apple TV is developing Monarch, a spinoff TV series from Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), picking up in the aftermath of Godzilla's battle with his fellow Titans in San Francisco.
Now, Variety is reporting that a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is set to begin shooting later this year on Australia's Gold Coast. King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island were shot down under, so this isn't a surprise; what does come as shock, however, is the fact that we're getting a Godzilla vs. Kong 2!
The stage may have been set for a rematch with the first movie, but nothing has been officially announced and there's no word on a writer or director at this stage. Adam Wingard is unlikely to direct as he's busy with his planned Face/Off sequel, but Legendary returning to this well makes a lot of sense.
The only way to top Mechagodzilla is likely to be Mecha-King Ghidorah, but more Godzilla battling Kong on screen is no bad thing. Keep checking SFFGazette.com for the latest updates.
