GODZILLA VS KONG Sequel Reportedly Starts Shooting In Australia Later This Year

Godzilla vs. Kong was embraced by fans of the MonsterVerse, so we have no doubt you'll be excited to learn that the sequel is closer to becoming a reality than previously thought. Read on for the latest...

Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse has been something of a mixed bag, and while Godzilla: King of the Monsters received a mostly negative response and underperformed at the box office, the studio understandably moved full steam ahead with Godzilla vs. Kong. That exceeded expectations in the midst of the pandemic, earning an impressive $468 million at the worldwide box office.

The clash between these two behemoths proved to be exactly what moviegoers wanted, and Legendary is clearly committed to its MonsterVerse plans. Back in January, we learned that Apple TV is developing Monarch, a spinoff TV series from Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), picking up in the aftermath of Godzilla's battle with his fellow Titans in San Francisco.

Now, Variety is reporting that a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is set to begin shooting later this year on Australia's Gold Coast. King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island were shot down under, so this isn't a surprise; what does come as shock, however, is the fact that we're getting a Godzilla vs. Kong 2

The stage may have been set for a rematch with the first movie, but nothing has been officially announced and there's no word on a writer or director at this stage. Adam Wingard is unlikely to direct as he's busy with his planned Face/Off sequel, but Legendary returning to this well makes a lot of sense.

The only way to top Mechagodzilla is likely to be Mecha-King Ghidorah, but more Godzilla battling Kong on screen is no bad thing. Keep checking SFFGazette.com for the latest updates.

I have not watched King of the monsters yet so I have not watched Godzilla versus Kong, I think I’ll go ahead and watch it even if I skip the other

@OldMan - Same.

I really enjoyed King of the Monsters.

On the other hand, Godzilla vs. Kong did nothing for me.

It as an empty CGI mess, the monsters lost scale and weight and Mechagodzilla looked very cheap, ugly and something out of CW-level show.

KOTM had beautiful cinematography and a sense of scare and tension (especially with Ghidorah).

Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown were also much better leads than Alexander Skarsgard and Rebecca Hall.

@Waddles - Kong was awesome, I really have to refresh my memory on the first movie though, my intention was to watch the four in a row but I can’t find the third one

@OldMan - I’ll check it out but if I can’t find it before Versus, Then I’ll watch it out of order eventually. I did watch about half of it on an illegal site but that’s because it’s all the site had. Half the movie. It’s a pretty good site for shows, because episodes are not long or not as long as movies anyway. I guess movies just get cut off

This is great! I thought Toho was done with Legendary but I guess not. Can't wait to see what classic monsters show up this time.

GVK had some of the absolute best CGI I've ever seen. I'd definitely watch the sequel. Have my boy Gamera in it.

Im always in for Godzilla and Kong. Even if the plot isnt great or the human characters are boring these movies are still enjoyable.
