Legendary CEO Thomas Tull Sounds Encouragingly Optimistic About PACIFIC RIM 2

While Pacific Rim 2 is still not officially confirmed, the latest statement from Legendary CEO Thomas Tull suggests a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's kaiju love letter is highly probable.

Chances of a Pacifim Rim sequel according to Thomas Tull

While speaking to Collider to promote Godzilla, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull was also asked about the status of Pacific Rim 2. Citing solid box office numbers for an original film, impressive home video sales, and strong merchandising, Tull's statement would lead one to believe that a sequel to Pacific Rim is only contingent upon Guillermo del Toro cracking the story. Tull began, "We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek- so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well."

In checking those numbers, Pacific Rim (2013) earned $411M worldwide. Batman Begins (2005) earned $374.2M. X-Men (2000) took home $296.3M. Superman Returns (2006) grossed $391M globally. The Fast & the Furious (2001) totaled $207.2M at the domestic box office and abroad. And Star Trek (2009) totaled $385.6M. All of these films went on to spawn at least one sequel if not launch successful franchises.

Tull went on to say, "It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it."

I didn't think it was all that great. I'd actually like to see a Godzilla vs. Whatever the hell those machines were and see them get ripped to shreds by Godzilla. I wouldn't watch a direct sequel to Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim was the most fun I had at the movies in 2013, so I'd love to see a sequel. Maybe we'll see that Kaiju/Jaegar hybrid piloted by Hermann and Newt that Del Toro was talking about a few months ago. It'd be cool to see it go into more Tokusatsu territory by having the aliens from the first movie send in ground troops, too.

Some of the most amazing visual effects I've ever seen. Unfortunately the thrill of watching machines bash monsters peaks in the first 30 minutes. Imagine if the first STAR WARS showed Luke blowing up 6 Death Stars...

x-men had a $75,000,000 budget & grossed $296,339,527 = $221,339,527 profit,it almost made three times what it cost to make that's why it got a sequel.

superman returns had a $270,000,000 budget & grossed $391,081,192 = $121,081,192,didn't get a sequel & ruined the franchise for seven years.

pacific rim had a $190,000,000 budget & grossed $411,002,906 = $221,002,906,it just made over its budget back.

i wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a sequel.

When I went to see this and the sword cut the flying Kaiju in half I actually went "[frick]INAMAZING". It was only afterwards that people I went with were saying how loud I was and how pretty much the whole audience were just chuckling at me.

To this day, not even ashamed.

You cant just say your movie made more money than other older movies without adjusing for inflation. The movie's budget was too high for 400 mil to be considered lucrative. Hence, the studio treads with caution atm.

You act as if movies that only double or triple their budget back get sequels. If that were the case we probably wouldn't see half of the sequels we have. Loads of movies that don't even break even get sequels.
