KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Stills Reveal Character Names And Offer Closer Look At The Movie's Leads

20th Century Studios has released a new gallery of stills from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, confirming several character names and offering us a closer look at the highly anticipated movie's leads.

20th Century Studios released the first teaser trailer for 20th Century Studios' Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes earlier this week, and it definitely impressed. The sneak peek also left fans with lots to discuss, with the prevailing theory being that the franchise's new lead must be Caesar's son, Cornelius.

Some official stills from the movie have now been released (via SFFGazette.com), confirming the identities of at least some of Kingdom's leads.

"Cornelius," for example, is confirmed to be Owen Teague's Noa. As for the armour-clad villain, it's Kevin Durand as Proximus Caesar, presumably a descendant of the original Caesar or an ape who has decided to take on his name due to the fact he's the leader of his people. The other orangutan pictured below is Peter Macon as Raka.

Finally, we can also confirm Freya Allan's human character is named Mae. As far as we're aware, none of these names have ties to the wider Planet of the Apes mythos, so they've all been newly created for this story. We're starting to get closer to the original movie's timeline, but it doesn't appear this continuation of the franchise is in any hurry to get there.

"Director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign," reads the synopsis, "in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows."

"As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike."

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague (IT), Freya Allan (The Witcher), Kevin Durand (Locke & Key), Peter Macon (Shameless), and William H. Macy (Fargo).

The screenplay is by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Patrick Aison (Prey), based on characters created by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver.

Producers include Wes Ball, Joe Hartwick, Jr. (The Maze Runner), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Jason Reed (Mulan), with Peter Chernin (Planet of the Apes) and Jenno Topping (Ford v. Ferrari) serving as executive producers.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, a new entry in 20th Century Studios' global, epic franchise, opens exclusively in theaters on May 24, 2024. You can check out these new stills from the movie in the gallery below.

I really doubt this movie is gonna lead up to the original movies, as I feel Rise, Dawn & War are already kind of reboots of Escape, Conquest & Battle. The trilogy starting with Kingdom can then be reboot of the original and Beneath.

Either way, I look forward to this a lot. Just not a big fan of the apes already having developed the ability to speak a fully formed language.

@bkmeijer1 - Pretty sure, if that ever really was the plan, they've abandoned it at some point. I honestly don't need it. I just want this franchise to be a chronicle of this new ape societies history.

@Drace24 - yeah, both franchises work really well on it's own.

And like I said, the last three movies of the original trilogy pretty much told the story of how Ape society came to be as well. I don't need it catching up either.

Wonder when they're going to talk about the astronauts from the first film

@ChocolateMousse - either that was just an easter egg, or we could see that be paid of in this new Apes movie (or trilogy). Bet one of the astronauts is called Taylor.

This film looks incredible. All the film needs is some good action set pieces and an emotional pull. I'm excited 😳

Wonder if they'd do the end of the world/time travel part of the original. It was fascinating with Caesars story originally having him fight so hard for human/ape relations when he knew what would happen. And it'd be cool showing rise, dawn, and war from different angles.

@Origame - I wonder that as well. I kinda doubt it will end where the original movie started though, and will instead do a retelling of the original two (with maybe this time without the world ending)

Man, I love this franchise. That's definitely one that I would want to just go on for as long as it can and show us the history of Ceasar's society. I wanna see the ape bronze age with ape mythology and ape agriculture, ape warfare, ape electricity and maybe one day an ape space program.

This looks good! I'm interested to know what the full timeline is. Do Apes rule the earth for thousands of years before Charlton Heston shows up or is it just "several generations?"
