Max Landis Gives A CHRONICLE 2 Update; Says It's "Moving Along"

Last we heard on the sequel to the found footage superpower flick, there were said to be clashes between the studio and Max Landis about the latter's script for the movie. While chatting to IGN, Landis acknowledges that their was discussion over it, but only because of the much darker tone..

The last update we had on Chronicle 2 actually came from screenwriter Max Landis' director father John, when he revealed (perhaps out of turn) that the studio and his son had very different ideas on the direction the story should go in, and suggested that they wanted a complete rewrite. Well now Landis Jr. has spoken up about it and reckons that although he and Fox had differences of opinion, it wasn't that they didn't like the script, just found it too dark. He is also adamant that the film will happen..at some point! Here is what Landis had to say to IGN in full.

"Chronicle 2 is in an interesting place right now. It's moving along. There was this whole announcement that they wanted to just do the same thing again because my father said that. My father is not involved in Chronicle 2. He doesn't know the process. It was not his place to say that. The truth is when you have a movie that was as successful as Chronicle was, it's not as quick of a process. There are a lot more voices coming in and saying 'This is what the sequel should be' because there's a bigger expectation and a bigger fear of failure. And that's really what's going on with Chronicle 2. Josh (Trank) is directing Fantastic Four. I'm doing a hundred other movies. Chronicle 2 has become this question of 'How do we all make a movie that we all respect?'. And that's true to what Chronicle is. There's no one at the studio who wants to make a bad movie. They all want to make a good movie just as much as I do. We're not fighting. The report came out that they didn't like my script. They liked my script. It's just a really dark script. The question is more of 'How do we all compromise to get something we want?' And that's an incredibly slow process.”

Apparently Landis then reiterates that he's sure Chronicle 2 will definitely happen, and that he's “60-75% sure that it will be a pretty damn good movie.”

Sequel will probably go down the same path as Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. At least we'll always have the first one!

DeHaan made Chronicle what it was, it's hard to imagine the sequel without him. :c

sKeemAn, agreed... He was honestly the best character in the movie as far as being a hero type. I was pissed when he died in the first one.

I am not really sure how this will work though. Two of the three are dead. The only thing they can really do is have a different group of kids. But then again what made the first movie so interesting was the style it was filmed in. With the characters actually filming and knowing the camera was there. If they do this on the second film it will be just the same thing as the first one all over again. If they do not use this then they will have to use something else to give it a unique feel. If they do not, then we will have a Blair Witch 2 on our hands...

I agree, the movie was good but it sure as [frick] doesn't need a sequel...same goes to Avatar...except Avatar was a shitty-overrated movie.

Guys, what does actually NEED a sequel? Sequels are not made out of necessity anymore, to continue a story that the studio/directors/writers feel has to be continued or completed, they are made for..you guessed it...MONEY! Best we can hope for is that they are good movies.

@Ror: Except Landis DOES have a story to tell. He's made that clear in interviews going way back - and it's what led to the studio's hesitance in the first place. They just wanted more of the same for the reasons you note - $$$ - but Landis said "no, no - I have a story to tell, let me tell it!". This is a good example of the clash and compromise required when 'art' meets 'commerce'. Hopefully the former doesn't completely lose out to the latter.

@RPD: So your opinion is as valuable as a fart in a thunderstorm. But less interesting.

Is all hope, excitement, anticipation and the prospect of being entertained by the efforts of others completely dead in people? All so cynical, so young...

Sure, it MIGHT be shit. But it might not too. Just try to look on the bright side occasionally. Even if you end up disappointed, the waiting will be less gloomy. :)

I actually really enjoyed the first one, and would like to see how a sequel could work. There's a lot of hidden potential there. And even if the second one sucks, like @duncboy said we still have the first one.

@keithm - you make a great point. If there is a good story then tell it, whether its dark or not. Honestly I don't know how it could not be dark based on what they set up for the "evil" character.

I actually liked this movie, but it was was only somewhat original in the way it told the story and I think that's what made it fresh and "new".

Here's the basic plot: 3 kids find a meteor. it gives them cool powers. We see the powers displayed (best parts of the movie IMO). One of the kids is evil and kills another super powered kid. And then? Wait...I don't even remember exactly how this movie ends after the death. Ie. it's not that memorable and probably should be left alone without a sequel...

well I didn't particularly care for the first one. It was alright but it didn't blow me away or impress me a whole lot. Probably going to pass on this if it actually happens.

Liked the first one. But they better really market a sequel with awesome footage for me to see it. I will echo everyone else on the self contained point.
