Mekhi Phifer Cast As Lead Character In New Season Of Torchwood!

The Lie To Me star has joined the cast of the show as CIA Agent Rex Matheson which instead of staying in Cardiff, Wales, will now have a global approach by filming in the US....

Deadline has reported that the drama has made another move for its upcoming fourth season, The New World. Torchwood has cast Mekhi Phifer as "Rex Matheson, a CIA agent who's a fast-tracked high-flyer with a lethal sense of humor who starts to feel his mortality when his life is put in danger."

This is the same role that Chad Michael Murray and Enver Gjokaj had been rumored to be up for, but neither quite fit the look that Torchwood has. Phifer seems a much better casting choice, and it's much easier picturing him as a CIA agent and in action scenes, especially after his stint as an FBI agent in Lie To Me.

You may also know him from his time on ER as Dr. Gregory Pratt. His film roles include 8 Mile and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. So far besides John Barrowman and Eve Myles returning as their characters Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, Arlene Tur as Vera Juarez is the only other casting confirmed.

Torchwood: The New World will air on BBC One in the UK and Starz in the US.

I pretty much gave up on this show when they killed off the two best, and most interesting, characters at the end of the second season. Throw in that shitty five episode series and the fact that they became more interested in showing Jack and Ianto having sex in his office every other episode than telling decent stories, and I knew that this show was no longer for me. Despite thinking Phifer is awesome, I doubt I'll watch this new one.

joshW@ they never should have killed owen and tascha.

I hope the show can live up to expectations. Now that Torchwood goes global. Although i think i'll mis that brittish vibe. I also hope they still have some kind of sewer, ninja turtle base. Or have there HQ in some kind of castle that still has many hidden rooms blablabla.

You know, [frick] Torchwood, make a B.P.R.D. series already!!

Any man that takes a role away from Chad Michael Murray, is a friend of mine. I look forward to seeing what they've done with the series. Casting Phifer, shows that they're off to a promising start.

I didn't know they stopped filming in Cardiff, that sucks! We need all the attention we can get lol.

I was in a hospital with my grandfather a few weeks ago, and we had to go through like the basement with the warden and he goes, 'they film Dr Who down here. All the time.' in one of the busiest Hospitals in Wales! lol

If they got rid of Russell T Davis as head writer I'd start watching this. Doctor Who has improved so much since The Moff took over.

@ Josh W, Agreed. Toshiko and Owen were the most interesting characters on the show. Ianto and Jack's relationship was so boring.

The show, for me, was just so inconsistent. Sometimes it could be good and other times it was terrible.

LEE: I see - not the world's biggest Doctor Who fan so missed that one! :P Left you a comment now though. Oh, and I'm glad you're enjoying Lie To Me! I fell behind near the end of the second season so will have to catch up on that soon, lol! Dexter and Supernatural are the only two shows I make sure to watch the minute they appear online to be honest!

I tried watching Lie to Me and gave up after the first 4 or 5 episodes. Had a redundancy to it that I didn't care for.

I have been patiently waiting for more Torchwood and Merlin! Bring it on!

Josh@ C'mon, a little bit of an over-exagerration about Jack and Ianto perhaps? I didn't think they showed that much of the two getting it on, otherwise I would have been the first to quit watching.

I was bummed about Toshiko, but I am one who likes it when main characters do get killed off, because that makes a show more realistic and believable to me. Not everything in life, and especially when involved in a dangerous line of work, ends up in a fairy tale and happily-forever ending.

I wish they would leave it in the UK and not go global with it. I don't see it working that way. Look at the US version of Top Gear, it sucks the UK version was awesome. Gordon Ramsays Kitchen Nightmares, the US version was bad compared to the UK version. Even the Office, while not bad the UK version is better. Its the British wit that gives it its charm which I think will be lost.

the five episode mini-series Children on Earth (which aired everyday for one week) was freaking epic.. but yes it was a shame killing off some of the characters but british tv shows like this have a tendency to do that (Spooks for example) and some American directors (Joss Wheadon) do the same aswell.

Paul Cornell (tv and comics writer) once said that its a writers job too make you really like a character then take them out to provoke reactions from viewer/readers.

Yeah but i do worry about the move to global locations hopefully it wont lose its british charm

Is John Barrowman even back? I haven't heard a peep about this (aside from the bit that RTD is over in LA developing 'Torchwood USA').

While I'll admit that my faith in RTD has somewhat wavered, I'm still looking forward to this. Hopefully the change in venue will deliver a much needed boost in quality.

So far, I like what I've heard so far (except for the move from Cardiff), but the casting of Phifer seems like a good move.

Can't wait for the new series.

I can't wait for this to comeback. Children of Earth was great, although the regular series needs work. I'm a big fan of British shows and actors; can't wait for Misfits (thanks Leee for introducing it) tomorrow and the Doctor Who special next week. I agree that US versions of shows they make over here usually suck.

I'm trepidacious about this.

I liked it in Cardiff, that's the main reason
I watched it cuz it was not an American production.
Something different from the Great Britain area!
It had a cool little vibe to it being set in
Cardiff!

But Phifer is a damn excellent actor and will
own this part. I was really bummed when they
killed him off on Lie To Me!

But I'm really pissed they killed off Ianto!
Although I didn't think the relationship
between jack and him seemed natural. It
seemed forced to me.

I don't know, it seemed kind of phony and
just set up to cause controversy. Owen
was the kind of guy I could see who would
be bi-sexual.

Forced writing is never good and I see
Davies force his writing quite often!
But I'll watch the new show and check it
out at least!

I like Gwen single tho'! For some reason
she really flips my buttons, that sexy
Welsh lass!
LOL

SPILOX@, now a BPRD series would be beyond awesome
but only if Del Toro ran it! Put it on HBO and we
have a win/win situation!

It would be great if RTD wasn't involved, but it won't keep me from watching it, I love me some Torchwood.
