According to THR Fassbender has officially joined the cast of Ridley Scott's new sci fi flick Prometheus. The film rose from the ashes of what was to be a prequel to the Alien franchise, although Scott Maintains that this film will still have "Alien DNA".

Fassbender was offered the role back when the film was still going ahead as the Alien prequel which suggests that the new story won't be too far removed from it's original incarnation. Plot details are still sketchy but we do know that Fassbender will play an android, staples of the franchise since Ian Holm first portrayed Ash in Scott's ground breaking original. The lead role went to The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo's Noomi Rapace, with a supporting role said to be being fought over by Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron.

Prometheus now has a scheduled release date of June 8, 2012.
