New PLANET OF THE APES Movie In Development From MAZE RUNNER Director Wes Ball

We assumed Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes would be the final installment in the saga, but there's a brand new Apes movie in early development at Fox with Wes Ball (Maze Runner) at the helm.

A new Planet of the Apes movie is in the works, and it'll be the first of the classic Fox titles to get the redevelopment treatment since Disney’s acquisition of the studio. Maze Runner filmmaker Wes Ball is reportedly on board to direct the project.

The iconic Apes franchise was rebooted (although the movies also served as prequels) back in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the new trilogy wrapped-up in 2017's superb War for the Planet of the Apes. Although there is plenty of room to continue the story, THR is not sure whether this new film will be a follow-up or a full reboot.

Ball will also produce the movie with with his partner at Oddball Entertainment, Joe Hartwick.

That's all we have to go on for now, but we'll update if and when more details come our way. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this news in the comments.

Down for a continuation but the director doesn’t inspire confidence.

Hope this isn’t a soulless cash grab.

@regularmovieguy - How about doing Planet Of The Apes, not a remake of the original film, but a more faithful readaption of the original novel

@dracula - I'd be way down for that.

Apparently Ball was working with Matt Reeves on something called Mouse Guard that got cancelled after the Disney/Fox merger went through. If Reeves trusts him, I'm willing to give the guy a shot.

I mean they still have the astronaut crew that went off to Mars in RotPotA. I suppose when they get back to earth they'll discover that their planet has drastically changed.

@TheRationalNerd - is personally never want to see this take on the Apes story ever get to the original Planet of the Apes. Maybe if they make more the last one could end with a ship appearing in the sky but I wouldn’t want any more

Logic would suggest that this new movie will be the start of a trilogy centered around Cornelius. Essentially, the true reboot of the classic movies.

Okay I'll give it a shot

I'd have no problem with turning the Apes trilogy into a saga. They could build on the "Lost in space" easter egg that was foreshadowed in the first one. Andy Serkis could return, but this time as an adult Cornelius.

The first three were a spin on Battle and Conquest. These next three could be a spin on the original and Beneath.

Makes sense. We just got an amazing prequel trilogy. Now let’s retell the original story. Or heck some sort of in-betweenquel would be awesome too.

I really want this to be good. I say it should be a time jump to the events of the original series but with the context of how the world was formed in the most recent trilogy. They set that up in Rise of them going up in the rocket so it would fit in continuity to now redo the original films

Not sure. My fave Maze Runner movie was the last one but the first that he directed was what we would call serviceable in setting up things.

Hopefully it performs as the first one from 2011 did which set up things nicely and IMO considered a good first step in beginning the franchise.

It will be hard to do it without Caesar though.

Aaaaand already we know it will be a disappointing followup to the Caesar trilogy.

Good!
If for no other reason to put Matt Reeves/FOX up against Wes Ball/Disney.
And let us see...
