PACIFIC RIM Getting Very Good Buzz At Early Screening

Earlier today, Legendary Pictures held an early screening of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim, and with the reactions being extremely positive, the director, who was in attendance, encouraged the viewers to pass along their experience. Check them out!

PACIFIC RIM SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim was directed by Guillermo del Toro, from a script written by Travis Beacham. The cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. In theaters July 12, 2013!

I'm really looking forward to this one. I cried tears if manly joy when I saw the trailer a few months ago.

Don't want to be the killjoy, but:

1) Industry people actually seeing the movie and having NO embargo to tweet about it with a few months before it's release is quite suspicious.

2) Mr. Burnett was one of those guys who raved about Green Lantern on Twitter before the movie hits the theatres.

3) Sounds like studio's planted buzz. Notice how some of them apparently didn't like it so much and seems afraid to say ("didn't love the movie as much..."; "it was also awesome cause it was free"...), while others are extravagantly praising the movie.

Anyway, not saying the movie is bad or a new Green Lantern, just saying that these specific opinions are pretty much biased and therefore should not be taken with too much faith.

I'm still very excited about Pacific Rim, though. Looks fun and Guillermo Del Toro is a great director.

I like Del Toro, but I'm not excited one bit for this movie. Why didn't he just do Hellboy 3 instead?

@Smith

Still not entirely convinced on this one -- all the reactions seem to be "hell yeah, special effects!" instead of "hell yeah, screenplay!", which is more my concern -- but hopefully everything is exactly as good as they're making it sound. I'd love to be won over, even if it's a premise I'm not so thrilled about.

That said, Burnett's endlessly drawn-out reaction did more harm than good for my personal opinion of the film. After the first few bits of choice hyperbole, I felt like I could feel his spittle right through the computer screen.

Three of the people raving here are critics/journalists. ALL of them RAVED about GREEN LANTERN. In particular Robert Meyer Burnett who said this after the Green Lantern screening:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert Meyer Burnett (director of Free Enterprise) on Twitter: GREEN LANTERN [frick]ing ROCKED. The 3D was AWESOME. As a lifelong DC fan, the opening ten minutes made me squeal like schoolgirl. … Believe it. The first ten minutes will make you believe. The 3D is also outstanding. … GREEN LANTERN was terrific fun. The fact that it works at all is a miracle, but it really does cook. The first ten minutes sold me. … The 3D in the opening ten minutes is wonderful. But YOU MUST see it with polarized glasses. The color is great. … It’s not campy at all. The humor is earned. And Mark Strong as Sinestro was AWESOME. … I LOVED GREEN LANTERN. Don’t know why, but it kinda’ felt like THE LAST STARFIGHTER. I know…”Huh?!? What?!?” … it really did feel like an 80′s movie, circa ’84… Weird. … BTW…In LexG parlance…Blake Lively…LOOK AT HER. SMOOOOOKING hot.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, this same guy is now the most vocal of the people who rave about Pacific Rim. If anything that's a BAD sign!

Just letting ya'll know...

Well, at early screenings of Green Lantern they said "it was the new Star Wars" and that it got a standing ovation when the credits rolled...

The internet baffles me... Movie that is basically giant robots fighting godzilla and looked to have great effects in the trailer. Directed by a guy who is hands down awesome. Getting rave reviews on Twitter.

/insert over the top screaming and dribbling about how it must be terrible and just like Green Lantern... Yup, its cool to be negative.
