POLL: What Did You Think Of AFTER EARTH?

POLL: What Did You Think Of AFTER EARTH?

The reaction from critics has not been kind, and the film - which was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Will Smith and his son Jaden - failed to make a significant impact at the box office. Regardless, what did YOU, the moviegoer, make of it? That's what we want to know!

Feature Opinion

After Earth never looked as if it would blow audiences away, but the fact that it starred Will Smith and was directed by the man behind The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable (as well as some real stinkers in all honesty, but this did at one time appear to be a return to form for M. Night Shyamalan) made it all the more shocking when the first reviews came in. Needless to say, they were NOT kind. You will more than likely struggle to find much at all said about this movie which IS positive, and its disappointing opening in North America seems to indicate that those reviews either put people off or that the general premise failed to connect with audiences. For those of you who DID decide to give it a chance this weekend however, what did you think? Well, here's your chance to tell us!

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

STARRING:

Will Smith as Cypher Raige
Jaden Smith as Kitai Raige
Isabelle Fuhrman as Rayna
Kristofer Hivju as Security Chief
Gabriel Caste as Ranger
Zoë Isabella Kravitz as Senshi Raige
Sophie Okonedo as Faia Raige

I slowly began to lose interest in M. Night Shyamalan as movie after movie continued to disappoint. The last straw was the brutalization of 'The Last Airbender'. I will no longer give this man's movies my money. Can't vote on it cause I haven't seen it.

@Xandera

It's actually Will's project, vision and movie not M. Night's. M. Night was hired to "direct" the film by Smith to be the fall guy in case of the movie tanking and getting critically panned which it unsurprisingly has, and with the comments i've seen about this movie since it's been released, it looks like it's working. Smith was damn smart to hire a director with an abysmal and undefendable track record of piss poor movies which will cause the failiure of the movie to automatically be attributed towards him despite not the real culprit of this rubbish..

From someone who's actually seen the movie rather than simply ranting aimlessly, the movie was decent. It was predictable, it's more dramatic than action-oriented, but all said its the first watchable movie with M. Night's name attached since unbreakable

Watched it last night, and the first hour dragged so badly. Will's character was a dick all the way through. Jayden's character was a pussy for most of the movie. It's hard to like a movie when most of the movie is two characters, and neither is likeable. I also thought we were going to see these highly evolved earth animals, but for the most part we got oversized baboons and a big bird. Not even to mention the poorly designed alien. After TLAB I said I'd never pay for another M.night movie. After this I'll never watch one again.

Didn't Will Smith give up the lead role in Django Unchained for this? Bet he regrets that decision now... or maybe not, if it was more about the money he was paid.

I'm glad Jamie Foxx got the Django gig though, not sure it would've been as good with Will Smith in the role, even though it was written for him. I wish he'd do more serious stuff like The Pursuit of Happyness, or maybe go completely the opposite direction and do more Fresh Prince stuff. Not a fan of his actiony/sci-fi stuff.

@Ocelot - Jeez, in that case, I don't know what's worse, M. Night Shyamalan's directing or Will Smith's lack of personal integrity. Mr. Smith needs a lesson in OWNERSHIP!

I plan on catching a matinee tomorrow. Truth is, Shyamalan puts out some of the most interesting, thoughtful, and insightful material in his movies. I'm a fan. He deserves better.

I for one went in with skepticism, because of all lash it received. After folding and reading a review on the Roger Ebert website, I was motivated to check it out. I'm a hardcore movie buff, and Will Smith is one of my favorite actors. After seeing This movie I can say with all confidence that it was a great film. Its really worth a look.

Did we really need a poll for this Josh? It's a film starring Will Smith and his son. Unless the film is called Pursuit of Happiness, it will suck. Plus you got M Night. It's like they want you not to see it.

Why is this on the main but Khan's article with Martian Manhunter in Man of Steel not?

I haven't seen this and probably will not see it, at least not in the theater. I do think the concept is very interesting tho, having to leave Earth for a 1000 years and return to find everything highly evolved. It's just done by the wrong director with M.Night. This guy hasn't put out a good movie since Sixth Sense
Humperdink
Humperdink - 6/3/2013, 6:13 AM
I guess I am in the minority because I enjoyed it.

The film was a simple enough story of a father and son dynamic in the midst of a transition.

As a sci-fi film it delivered, and I found it also to be entertaining.

Was it perfect? No, but it was far from terrible. It was a well put together film about a shifting of roles and responsibilities. Typical father and son coming of age.

I think a lot of people are just jumping onto the 'I hate M. Night" or "WIll and Son nepotism" bandwagon.

Plenty of people in Hollywood have family they have brought into the business in the exact same way.

Nick Cage can change his last name, but do people really think he didn't get his foot into the door being a 'Copolla'?

Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie, Ben Stiller, Benedict Cumberbtach, Robert Downy Jr....They ALL had family in the business.

Who cares?

I thought the movie was fine. It explains why the characters act the way they did. The movie wasnt some reboot or remake and I personally think its getting a bad rap because of the "nepotism". Which as everyone knows goes on in Hollywood from the top of the top to the guards working at Paramount. I think most people's negative reaction has to do with their emotions for Will, Jaden and MNS versus the characters portrayed on film. I hope they make a sequel, which is eluded to in the prints they put out to cover the back story of "ghosting", just to piss alot of people off.
QuietStorm
QuietStorm - 6/3/2013, 7:29 AM
Also it's not an action thriller. There's a group of people I've seen commenting everywhere who expect it to be the Avengers or something with explosions everywhere. I think a lot of us are spoiled when it comes to summer blockbusters. Will played his part and IMO Jaden did well with the dialogue given. I thought this was an extreme upgrade from Airbender and is undeserving of the low scores its gotten on metric, RT & IMDB. Now if ya wanna roast me, go ahead.

@ quietstorm
It not being an action thriller is what threw me off about the flick. They advertised it like that. Then you watch it and it moved so slow. It was a drama in disguise as an action thriller. Then you had the father/son dynamic going on that didn't work for me. Normally one or the other you could side with, but I ended up hating both. Not that they did a bad job acting, because they both did good job protraying there roles. It's just that both characters as written sucked. I just wasn't to happy to be dupped into a drama, when I wanted action.

This is one of those rare times where I could envision the trainwreck this movie was going to be simply from its log line, back when it was first announced. The first trailers looked exactly as I thought they would, and the reviews were just as scathing. Is there some schadenfreude at play here? Perhaps. But you have to wonder how this movie's yawner of a premise (coupled with the non-genius of M. Night) got greenlit in the first place.

@Ocelot, @Xandera It might be Will Smith's story. but M. Night Shyamalan wrote the screenplay. all blame goes to Shyamalan. Just Like all blame goes to him for The Last Airbender debacle

Maybe I'll make a double feature with this and Oblivion when they're both out on blu-ray and I can borrow them from some friends. Chances are I won't watch it all, though.

I didn't expect this to be a huge success at the BO, despite the Smith factor. Now I'm just really interested in how World War Z will perform.

It's just a bad movie. Why in the amazing future the best thing we can come up with to fight aliens is Particle projection weapons?... no Laser guns?... no Pointy sticks? Yes that's how we fight aliens in the future pointy sticks, that are lost with no explanation in the movie. Here son, take this pointy stick to defend yourself it's the most important thing that you possess you'll have it in one scene but not the next. Where did it go? Who knows? Are you worried because it's gone? Nah. Conveniently you won't run into anymore deadly creatures over the next 10 km even though every 2 meters you moved previously something tried to kill you. How did the alien navigate if it only saw pheromones? They didn’t say it attacked things giving off human pheromones, they specifically said that they aliens saw by detecting pheromones that’s why “Ghosting” was possible. Well last time I checked rocks don’t give off pheromones. Speaking of Pheromones they are air born so how does it track anyone under water or someone who was recently under water? So on and so fourth, it was a bad movie.

I don't care what anyone says, I'm going to see for myself.

Too many people on these forums are negative minded and jump to false conclusions.

I like Will Smith and I don't fall for all the hate that some just love to dish out.

I think this movie is way better than some are ever going to give it credit for, so as I said I'm going to see for myself!
