Home Video And Rental Sales Look To Breathe New Life Into The Possibility Of A POWER RANGERS Sequel

Power Rangers' box-office total fell below expectations, and chances of a sequel looked bleak. However, the film is doing well in home video and rentals sales, which could make another film a possibility.

Lionsgate and Saban looked to make a big splash when it announced Power Rangers, and even had a plan to develop as many as seven films. When the movie was released back in March it floundered at the box-office, a fact that director Dean Israelite attributed to the PG-13 rating. The prospects of a sequel looked slim, although Israelite revealed that plans have been discussed by the studios.

The film may have gotten a shot in the arm, as according to Home Media Magazine, it is doing rather well in the home video and rental sales. So well, that it is expected to nab the top spot over John Wick: Chapter 2 and Beauty and The Beast in home video sales, and beat Logan and Life for the top rental spot.

As CinemaBlend points out, this surge in home video sales could be what the franchise needs to help get a second movie made. Along with the home video and rental sales, the film has strong merchandising and toy numbers, which is no guarantee that a second movie will be made, but certainly helps.

You can check out Power Rangers on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download now.

This was kind of a fun if really messy movie. I won't care if they make it either way but if they do, might have to check it out

I really didn't mind this movie. I went in with low expectations and a curiosity as to how they would adapt my cheesy beloved childhood show. It was fine, and I'd see another. I'd like to see the Green Ranger story play out, and perhaps more background on the original team and Lord Zedd.

I love the concept of them earning their morphing ability but I wish Rita had Goldar fight them before she made her monster grow!

PG-13 did not hurt this movie at all.
It was actually a fairy decent movie that has plenty of room to grow the characters and the mythos.
If they don't make a sequel I will be completely dumbfounded since movies like Transformers 2-5, Nut Job 2, Shrek 3, Dumb & Dumberer, Hanover 2-3, etc.... got way too much money and thought... shall I go on?

The first half was good in my opinion, they were trying to go for a darker more character driven story, which worked, but not so much about the second half

Give the sequel a tone similar to the first half of the film, make the suits practical, and then it could truly work for a sequel, oh also make it a smaller budget venture

@ConnorHawkeye - The first 2 acts were solid(for me), and the morphing moment was earned. The actual Ranger fight was wayyyyy too short and the Zord battle dragged wayyy too long

the merchandising has always been the heart of power rangers profits. that is why it still exists.

i am not sure how they can have a plan for 6 movies when it takes them so long to decide if they want to make a 2nd one.

@BlackStar25 - Same, the one movie in this version of the Power Ranger universe was fine enough. We don't need anymore from them.

@PrimitiveMan - Agreed. It was an alright movie but it did not spike my interest in a sequel.

It definitely deserves a sequel. The first one was surprisingly fun! And I'm not even a fan.

This is one of those movies that didn't do well in theaters because people just were not sure about it. Also had lots of competition from other titles playing at the time. So people were willing to give it a shot for video rental instead. Same thing will happen with the latest King Author movie. Another one that was a very fun movie to watch and I want to see it continue.

Yea no, the movie was awful and it failed because it was awful. Hopefully that will be the end of this series...

@MrNegative - So true, I have no desire to see a sequel set in this version of the Power Rangers universe. One film was definitely enough.

Well there is also a lot of competition. As an avid comic book movie fan, it's hard to fork over money for all these movies. With a less crowded schedule, I suspect this film would have done better. But ultimately, people chose to see the latest Marvel/Disney and WB films in theaters and Redbox this one.

This was a great movie and definitely deserves a sequel. The only con I had with the film was the couple of shotty cgi scenes in the third act. The film had plenty of action even with them only morphing in the third act, and had plenty of character development, and good character moments. The film surpassed my expectations.

Having the Green Ranger and Dragonzord in a sequel will put nerds in theatres.

@billnye69 - Well... That's if they don't pull a Ghostbusters move and make the Green Ranger a Woman like they're talking about.

I don't know if people will be happy with that.

@NubaX - GOD NO!
Two of Tommy's biggest character bits are his romance with Kimberly and his macho revelry with Jason.
Neither of which can be done in he is turned into a female.
