Jason David Frank has died at the age of 49.

TMZ confirmed the tragic news this morning and are reporting that his death was the result of suicide.

Further details are unavailable, but his rep Justine Hunt has shared the following statement, "Please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being. He loved his family, friends and fans very much. He will truly be missed."

He is survived by his four children.

Frank played the fan-favorite Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from 1993-1995 and also headlined Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie as the White Ranger. He would later become the Red Ranger for Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo - and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie - before ultimately passing the torch to a new generation of young heroes.

He returned a few years later for the epic 10-year anniversary episode, "Forever Red," in 2002 before coming back for a semi-regular role as the Black Ranger in Power Rangers Dino Thunder.

After that season, he stayed involved with the franchise at conventions and made cameos on special occasions, namely in the Power Rangers Super Megaforce episode, "Legendary Battle," in 2014 and the  Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel episode, "Dimensions in Danger" in 2018. He also made a quick cameo in the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, alongside original co-star Amy Jo Johnson.

Frank announced his retirement from the Tommy Oliver role earlier this year, when he revealed that he would not return for next year's 30th-anniversary special.

With 257 episode appearances since the show's inception, Frank is the longest-serving cast member and his Tommy Oliver is widely considered the greatest Power Ranger of them all.

Rest easy JDF...

@TheVandalore - Suicide is a tricky thing. You have to realize that for a person to even consider it, much less go through with it, the amount of pain they must have been feeling was enough for them to leave behind every aspect of their life in order to make it stop.

It's hard to judge. All we can do is be thankful that we're not in that kind of position.

@TheVandalore - for context, all through my 20s I was suicidal, in an out of hospitals locked up for over dosing and cutting my body to shreds. I'd gotten better, got help and started a new chapter in my life, got a great job, got married and started a family, last year I lost my wife and kids and house in the divorce and got suicidal again for the first time in over a decade since my 20s, had to take a long break from here and check myself into a facility for a bit and got some help before I acted on my old impulses and did more harm. It's been almost a year and I'm barely getting my shit together. I've got a new job that's better for me but pays less but I'm able to take care of myself again. Barely able to be self sufficient. I'm on a bunch of new meds and I'm dieting better and actively participating in my mental health recovery and rebuild my life with my kids.

I say all of this to express, without condoning and condemning, I agree with you. But also, I'm fully of the belief some people literally aren't themselves when their brain is sick. When I'm at my lowest, my sadness is sickening. I'm not me.

I don't know the man, but I was a Tommy Oliver fan boy my entire life. I've followed his career this entire time and genuinely love Jason David Frank.... and honestly I'm pissed of his sickness took him down too. He loved his kids and would never abandon them, so if this really was suicide, Jason David Frank had a mental illness. Or some dark dark DARK demons we don't know about.

Sad to see. He largely became the face of the fandom in the last 10 years. Really sad to see

Sad news, Rest in Power JDF.

Hands down he portrayed one of, if not THE most memorable character of my childhood, Tommy. Only guy to ever may think pony tails on dudes were cool.

Green Power Ranger Forever!

He had made the decision already....

2022 is seriously ending on a terrible note.

JDF was THEE reason we all loved power rangers. His gratitude towards all of his fans will never go forgotten. I'm just at a loss of words. I didn't stop collecting megazords until like the 7th grade. I was so happy to see him return in Dino Thunder as a kid. What was even more entertaining was his role in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie. From green ranger to white ranger! Ah! Damn! You will be missed man! So sad. 🙏🏽🕊😞

@zeon00 - And as one of them, between this and Kevin Conroy, it breaks my heart that we’ve lost two beloved childhood idols.

@Origame - I think even the disrespectful should have stayed..it's the guys opinion...but we should also allowed be allowed to flame him in the comments.

Its still otherwise mostly respectful.

Damn. When I heard I was wondering if it was accident or illness but I was hoping it wasn't this. Rest in Piece. You were a childhood hero to a lot of 90s kids.

@MyCoolYoung - And, he was!
I didn't follow the show(s), but, I knew who he was because of his character's following. He became synonymous, not just with the White Ranger, but as the face of the Power Rangers.
My sincerest condolences to his family, friends & fans!☮

This is truly the worst year for us fans. So many legends of the genre passing away literally on a monthly basis. Neal Adams, George Perez, Tim Sale, Kazuki Takahashi, Kim Jung Gi. I still haven't gotten over Kevin Conroy's death, and now this on top of it.

R.I.P.
