RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Sequel: Apes Will...Talk?

In a Podcast, "Apes" screenwriter Amanda Silver confirms that work is underway on a follow up to this year's surprise hit, and hints that we may be hearing a lot more than a "NOOOOOOO" from our Simian heroes..

The most memorable scene in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes was probably when mistreated chimp Caesar (Andy Serkis) finally had enough abuse and retaliated while shouting "Noooooo" at his tormentor. Of course knowing where this story will eventually go, this is clearly a precursor to all of the apes speaking when they ascend to power. But will they be chatting away as soon as the first follow up comes along? In today's Q & A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast screenwriter Amanda Silver speaks a little about the sequel. She says that the title will be "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes: Part Two" but is most likely joking or just unwilling to discuss the real title (if they have one yet). She also says..

We’re working on the sequel right now, to the prequel, and so the excitement is – I’m not gonna tell you, but – are they gonna talk or not? Part of the challenge was how to get across what was happening between the apes without words. In the end I think it was a good challenge for us. It created better storytelling.

That sounds to me like she is suggesting they will have a different challenge next time in how to have the apes speaking openly. But That's just me. It would certainly be the natural progression of the story, but it all depends on how many sequels Fox are going to squeeze out here. They could just have the apes utter the occasional word in the next one and save the full on conversation for a third movie. I think that might actually be a better way to ease into it myself. What do you guys think?

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.

ROTPOTA was awesome! I'm sure they'll figure out a way for the apes to communicate withouth them having full on conversations... I think they need to keep some of their animalistic qualities... That's why this film worked so well.

@SpiderAssassin - Totally agree with you.

@Grif - I used to find your comments quite funny, but now you bore with your repetitiveness... Do you have anything positive to say at all about anything?

I think that except for having a nuclear or virus apocalypse killing the human race, there's NO WAY a bunch of Apes can take control.

Didn't expect much of this movie and avoided it like the plague after seeing the Tim Burton version. Read the reviews and talked to a few people......ended up buying it last week on Blu Ray. Did I miss out! Great movie and looking forward to part 2.

I think Caesar should be the only one to speak remotely full sentences. sort of like the broken english that was subtitled between him and maurice when they spoke sign to each other

the other apes should be limited to a small handful of words since Caesar is the most intelligent and the others are still developing

My assumption is that they will split the story into 3 parts:

Part one is what we saw in Rise

Part two will be the war between humans and apes along with the outbreak of the spreading virus

Part three should be the return of Charlton Heston's character and his crew returning to what they thought is an alien planet where apes evolved from humans, when in actuality it is merely earth the entire time (just like the original)

@TEA & MARVEL

Drive was REALLY good. The soundtrack was amazing and the lack of dialog would lull you into the feel of a drama, then *BOOM* crazy violence!!! The director was manipulating you throughout the whole film.....and it was wonderful!

Oh, and FAST FIVE was absolutely NOT a crapfest! The others maybe, but that last one was brilliant! ;)

I agree with GrayFox. I think that just a small handful of the apes should be able to talk and the sequel will have a war where the humans are being wiped out by a virus that the apes are immune to. I liked the Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Interesting everyone seems to have missed the hints in this film about a possible reason why apes will be everywhere (and rise up). did no one notice the mars mission, then later when it was reported "lost"?
