Earlier this week, the news broke that British actor Dan Stevens (Onslaught) will play Alex Murphy in Prime Video's Robocop TV series, taking over the iconic role from Peter Weller and Joel Kinnaman.
Peter Ocko (Pushing Daisies) will serve as showrunner, while James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett are executive producers. MGM and Blumhouse Atomic Monster are developing the series for Amazon's streaming platform.
It's been revealed that, in the eight-episode Robocop series, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer, Alex Murphy.
Talking to ScreenRant (via SFFGazette.com), Stevens revealed what fans can expect from Robocop, confirming that the franchise's trademark satirical outlook will carry over to this new interpretation.
"I think it was the humour," he said of what drew him to the role. "The satire that Peter wants to preserve from the original. The two things I remember from the original are the extreme violence, which, at the age I was, I’d never seen anything quite like, and also the satirical take on it. And, yeah, I hope it’ll be just as entertaining."
The actor shared similar sentiments in a chat with ComicBook.com, noting, "That original is one of my favourite films of all time. For so many of my friends and me, it was such an iconic movie; I think maybe one of the first exposures to extreme violence and also satire. I think that’s what I’m most looking forward to, hopefully preserving those elements."
Hopefully, the "extreme violence" will be included in Amazon's take on Robocop. However, that will depend on how Prime Video is approaching the property and whether the plan is to head down the TV-MA route or attract a younger-skewing audience.
Robocop has heaps of potential, and landing a lead like Stevens should significantly increase interest. There's no word on a release window for the series or who will join the Godzilla vs. Kong and Legion star in the show.
Since its debut in 1987, Robocop has endured as one of the most iconic and culturally significant franchises in science fiction. What began as a bold social satire—blending visceral action with a critique of corporate greed, privatisation, and the nature of identity — has resonated across generations, spawning sequels, television series, video games and comic books.
RoboCop spawned two sequels, an animated series, and even a couple of live-action takes on the property for television. The franchise was rebooted with limited success in 2014 with the Joel Kinnaman-led movie.
Grossing $242.6 million on a reported $130 million budget, it received mixed reviews (50% on Rotten Tomatoes), and the franchise was shelved until 2023's well-received RoboCop: Rogue City video game. That was set in the same world as the movies led by Peter Weller.
