Joel Kinnaman Says His ROBOCOP Reboot Should Have Channelled More Of This Element From The Original Film

With Amazon purchasing MGM in 2022, they now also own the rights to RoboCop. Not long after the acquisition, word leaked out that Amazon was developing a movie and a television series based on the futuristic Detroit police officer, with the TV show premiering first.

As he continues his Silent Night press tour, Joel Kinnaman is revisiting his RoboCop reboot as the media prepares for Amazon's upcoming reboot by looking back on the  2014 remake.

'It was a cool experience. I think if I would have done it now, I think I would have inserted myself more into it," Kinnaman shared to Comicbook when asked about his experience making the reboot.

He added, "I love [director] José's [Padilha] concept into it. The one thing, I think, was lacking in that film, I like to be self-critical, I think that it was one of those films where I think, we who made it didn't fully take into account what RoboCop was for the fans. Tonally, that sort of [Paul] Verhoeven satire, because it's so ingrained in the RoboCop franchise and its being."

"It's different when a new filmmaker comes in and puts his voice on it, and José had a very clear image of what he wanted to do, it was an anti-Empirialistic take, and I think that movie would have done better if we had listened more to the fans beforehand. But I think it stands alone ... I almost think the RoboCop film we did would have been a better movie if it wouldn't have been named 'RoboCop.'"

Prior to Amazon purchasing MGM, the studio was actually developing a RoboCop picture with director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) that would have picked up right where the original film ended, ignoring its sequels.

Blomkamp eventually left the project, and Abe Forsythe (Little Monsters, Tripping Over) took his place. However, Amazon's acquisition was approved shortly after Forsythe was hired, and it is believed that Amazon is opting for a fresh start with  Alex Murphy.

Kinnaman's 2014 remake earned  $242.7 million worldwide from a production budget of $100 million- meaning that the film was not a colossal failure but still fell just shy of breaking even for the studio.

Reviews for the film were abysmal with critics on Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 49% approval rating with an average score of 3.3 out of 5. General viewers were also disinterested in the remake, giving it a 49% audience score.

ROBOCOP 2014 SYNOPSIS
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and OmniCorp – the world’s leader in robot technology – sees a golden opportunity to reap billions for their company. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is critically injured, OmniCorp grabs their chance to build a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and will stop at nothing – no matter the cost to Alex – to make sure the program succeeds. But OmniCorp never counted on one thing: there is still a man fighting inside the machine.

It annoys me we always see his sleek blacksuit, cause the actual robocop suit he wears in the movie is way cooler

@BlackSpider - man that looks so much better

@BlackSpider - It was a massive mistake not keeping this suit throughout the film.

@BlackSpider - definitely the better suit! I really disliked how he was still involved with his family. That’s part of the poetry of the original. Torn between who he used to be (Murphy) and who he is now (Robocop) and his ties to that life.

@JonAwesome - I get what you're saying but I somewhat disagree. I think if you remake something you do it differently to the original. This could have been explored pretty well, but you are correct it still good in the original

This is correct. The original Robocop movies satires society well, even more so when we look back on them today. The reboot was just a generic action movie.

@mountainman - I thought it was a pretty decent film and not as bad as most say it is. Definitely nowhere near the original trilogy but not bad either.

I thought it was enjoyable. Never watched the original.

@Feralwookiee - How many people love Scarface? How many people have seen the original? How many people even know it's a remake?

@Highflyer - I'm being (mostly) sarcastic of course.

You HAVE to see the original.

@DarthVanDyke - I don't get the love for the 80's version. It's pretty sloppily directed and shot and Pacino's "accent" is hilariously bad for the entire movie. I can see some camp value in it, but otherwise, meh imo.

You have a point about these younger kids not knowing it's a remake, although I'd argue the original Robocop was/is culturally much more popular than the old black and white Scarface.

There's plenty of satire in the 2014 RoboCop - it's Sam Jackson's entire purpose in the film.

It wasn't brutal enough (the ED209 should have killed the kid at the beginning).
It was duller than the original in every single instance.

@MarvelZombie616 - Yes.
Not going with an R rating and not leaning into the over the top satire like the original are probably the two biggest problems with the remake imo.

You've gotta have a scene where Robocop shoots someone in the dick! 🤣

Still a good film for me. Guilty pleasure.

Decent, but definitely would have channeled the OG movie better not being restrained to PG-13.
