Sam Worthington Says Filming On James Cameron's AVATAR 3 Will Start Next Month

James Cameron, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña will return to Pandora next month as filming resumes on Avatar 3 ahead of the film's December 2025 release.

Filmmaker James Cameron said that he wouldn't have to worry about developing Avatar 4 and 5 if no one saw Avatar: The Way of Water. It's safe to say that Cameron definitely has a fourth and fifth film on his to-do list after The Way of Water made over $2 billion at the box office.

However, he still needs to finish Avatar 3 first. Franchise star Sam Worthington has revealed that filming on Avatar 3 is slated to start up next month. "We go back to work on it in a month and it’s big. It’s bigger than you can imagine," said Worthington.

Cameron recently discussed the challenging filming process for The Way of Water, which was halted mid-shoot because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done," said Cameron.

He also went on to touch on the fourth Avatar film, which is currently set to hit theaters in 2029.  "We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven't shot yet. So we'll start on that after three is released."

The first Avatar movie was released in 2009 and has grossed $2.923 billion worldwide to date.

Thirteen years later, in 2022, a follow-up titled Avatar: The Way of Water was launched, and it has now brought in $2.32 billion globally.

Thankfully, the water scenes in Avatar 3 were shot concurrently while the aquatic scenes in The Way of Water were filmed, meaning that the third movie should, theoretically, be much further along than when Cameron began working on the second Avatar film.

The Avatar franchise stars Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri/Dr. Grace Augustine, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, CCH Pounder as Mo'at, Britain Dalton as Lo'ak te, Jamie Flatters as Neteyam, Edie Falco as General Frances Ardmore.

Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh, and David Thewlis are confirmed to portray new characters in Avatar 3

Barring any delays, Avatar 3 will arrive in theaters on December 19, 2025 while Avatar 4 currently has a December 21, 2029 release date.

Avatar: The Way of Water Synopsis:
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

I'm excited for the third entry. It's such a spectacle to see them in Imax. Can't say I really ever rewatch the Avatar films, but you'll definitely see me in the theater as soon as a new comes out.

Anyone here play the game yet? If it wasn't so pricey I'd give it a go, but it's hard to think its worth the $89 CAD it's going for...

@RedFury - after seeing some reviews, I'm staying away from the game. Think they should've copied Horizon instead of Far Cry

@RedFury - it's definitely gonna be a spectacle.

@bkmeijer1 - So true, going the Horizon route seems like a no brainer. Avatar as an fps was an odd choice.

@Origame - lol, say what you will about it, but it's damn pleasing to the eyes in imax 3D.

@RedFury - with Indiana Jones I get they make it an FPS to distance it from other action-adventure games, but with Avatar I just can't think of a good reason.

Pandora is beautiful, and a first person perspective really limits that imo. And then there is the gameplay that just really looks limiting too

@bkmeijer1 - yeah it looks like it fits Indy well. It gives me the vibe of that old Riddick game on Xbox. The perspective fits that boxed in world of ruins that Indy explores.

And yeah shoving our perspective into first person, in an exuberant and colorful world like pandora seems like a huge disservice. One of the reasons games like Red Dead 2 is so awesome is that you get to see the grandness of the west through the third person perspective. Same with Horizon, or other exploratory games of the genre. This sort of reminds me of how Cyberpunk could have also used a proper third person mode as well. As much as an fps that it is, it would have been nice to see that city from the third person.

I never watched the second one, is it as sh1tty as the first?

@harryba11zack - I thought the first Avatar was good but it's definitely Cameron's weakest film. But I genuinely think Avatar 2 is one of his best.

Never had any desire to watch these. Never will watch these.

What's so special about these films that they freaking crack 2 billion at the box office?

bkmeijer1 - 1/20/2024, 5:52 PM
@lazlodaytona - suppose because it's a movie that's only worth watching on the big screen because of the visuals.

Watching this at home just doesn't cut it, and it doesn't have a story or group of characters to save it

They'll go all in on the story this time, the second did a little better with the family dynamic. Eye candy sure, but it was a spectacular spectacle! Don't half ass 3d and cgi, he shows the potential. Wanna know the secret? It's TIME lol time to watch the Texans cover!

I'm sure before 2 came out Cameron said number 3 was about 98% done??? So i was assuming it was just the VFX left to finish..

Way of Water is definitley the best IMAX experience ive had, only thing that was a bit weird was the high frame rate in some of those scenes.

Say what you want about the story but nothing tops it visually. I'm looking forward to see what's next. Cameron doesn't make a movie unless it pushes the envelope.

Enjoyed both movies, I would say the second is better than the first movie.Looking forward to the third movie. Probably the best chance of another movie doing over $2 Billion.

MarkJulian

@grif - They filmed all the water scenes for 3 while they were filming 2. But rumors state that the third film focuses on the fire tribe and is set in a volcano.

Let me guess what the plot of Avatar 3 is: Evil humans come from space to steal resources from the alien planet. Avatar 4 and 5 should be excellent. I bet those evil humans keep coming back. Lol

I thought they were shooting all of the sequels at the same time over the last 10 years...was that not part of the thing?
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/20/2024, 5:49 PM
Wait, I thought 2 and 3 were shot back-to-back with some parts of 4 already done as well. Guess there was more to do then.

Anyway, I'll watch this on the big screen. The visuals and worldbuilding are great, but I really hope it improves in the writing department with the third one.
eddyxx
eddyxx - 1/20/2024, 5:55 PM
@bkmeijer1 -They shot all of the water scenes for 3 at the same time as 2. And shot the scenes with the kids for 4 at the same time as 2 cause there is going to be a big time skip in 4.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/20/2024, 6:04 PM
@eddyxx - that actually makes a ton of sense, thanks. They probably couldn't build up the whole water rig set again for the new movie.

And if 3 has a similar story structure to 2, I can see the first act be at the water tribe before they move to the fire tribe. Would be easier to just have that done filming already.
MarkJulian
MarkJulian - 1/20/2024, 6:05 PM
@eddyxx - Yeah, I forgot about that. They shot all the kid scenes for 4 as well b/c they'll get too old by the time 4 starts filming in earnest. Avatar 4 has a big time skip and then 5 is partially set on Earth.
