For many years, William Shatner was synonymous with James T. Kirk on the small screen, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has now cast The Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley as the iconic Enterprise Captain.

A new actor is set to take over as one of the most iconic sci-fi heroes in TV history, Captain James Tiberius Kirk!

In an unusual move, Paramount+ has announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has added The Vampire Diaries alum Paul Wesley to the cast of its currently shooting second season. He'll sit in the chair vacated by William Shatner as a new take on the legendary Enterprise Captain.

“Paul is an accomplished actor, an astonishing presence and a welcome key addition to the show,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers in a statement. “Like all of us, he is a life-long Star Trek fan and we are excited by his interpretation of this iconic role.

The first season of Strange New Worlds doesn't air until May 5, but several of Kirk's familiar crewmates, including Mr. Spock and Lieutenant Uhura, are already in place after debuting in Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to debut this May, and also stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Ethan Peck as Mr. Spock, Babs Olusanmokun as Doctor M'Benga, Christina Chong as L'an Noonian-Singh, Celia Rose as Nyota Uhura, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, and Bruce Horak as Hemmer.

Im so confused because this is supposed to take place ten years before Spock and Jim meet I thought? Either way, More Kirk in any format is a win for me :)

@NightEagle3 - yeah I'm kinda too. Maybe this show will turn out to be a reboot universe anyway? Can imagine by being a hard prequel, they eventually are gonna run out of territory to explore (timeline-wise)

@NightEagle3 - I don’t know Trek Lore that well..but Spock hinted at Wrath of Khan, that he we fully aware of how Kirk “beat” the No Win Scenario at the Academy. Just figured they were classmates. But since Spock is Vulcan and much smarter he was put onboard Enterprise while Kirk worked his way up through the ranks.

@NightEagle3 - You have to remember that he is coming in during the second season, not the initial one. Hopefully it will explain how they meet at that point.

@IronGenesis - That actually makes a lot of sense. I guess I got it wrong and just because this show takes place ten years before the original series, it's not really ten years before they meet, but 10 years before they SERVED together. Makes more sense that way I guess.

@bkmeijer - I hope its not another reboot universe because as much as I love the JJ films, Ill be the first to admit rebooting the universe that first time didn't go well with fans. But you're right, being a hard prequel comes with a lot of disadvantages territory wise. Sigh. Can we just have a parallel Star Trek series with all new characters not already tied to lore?

@NightEagle3 - I guess there is still enough room with the 10 years, but still kinda bummed we won't be getting Kirk and Spock serving together. Then again, the JJ movies alreasy gave us that reboot so it isn't really necessary yet

Maybe I'll give this a try. I said so too with Discovery and Picard, but never got around to it.

Pretty cool he got to sit next to Shatner. Thats some great coincidence

@bkmeijer - Discovery has finally really found its footing with this current season, my opinion of course. Still have a few things I don't like but that's usual for almost anything. Picard is trying its best. "Q" is back this season so there is that. Just don't expect to see the same Picard as he was in First Contact. His age is really showing.

@Mugens - hope SNW can continue Discovery's rise in quality then.

Picard is always thought was more a thing to watch because of nostalgia, but since I never actually was around for TNG I don't really have that nostalgia anyway.

@Dredd97 - I seem to remember a lot of dialogue where he paused, or put emphasis in strange places. Not as extreme as Christopher Walken, but odd just the same.

@comicfan100 - They have been confirming a new Trek movie since the third one. Like twice a year now they release a press statement claiming Pine and others are close to signing on for more movies. It's never been true when they report this, it's designed to trick investors into getting involved on the ground floor. I think it was in like 2018 when they first started to make claims like Chris Pine and Hemsworth were coming back for the 4th movie.

Not gonna lie, kinda lost in the continuity. OG ST > STNG > STDSN > STV > STE (which was set before OGST?) > STD (haven’t watched, not sure where it falls in) > STNF (Completely lost)
