Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Star Warns Critics Of Gay Themes To "Prepare To Be Pissed Off"

Karim Diane has a blunt message for viewers upset by Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s gay themes, teasing what they can expect when the series returns for its final season.

If the LGBTQ+ representation in Season 1 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy upset you, Karim Diane has a warning about Season 2: “Prepare to be pissed off.”

With the Paramount+ series preparing to end on its second season, the young actor, who plays Klingon cadet Jay-Den Kraag, teased what's ahead. And while he couldn’t reveal much about the story, he made it clear that the show won’t be backing away from the themes that divided viewers.

Speaking with TrekMovie, Diane was asked whether he could share anything about the upcoming season without getting himself in trouble.

“Without getting in trouble, no. But I can say… If anybody was excited by seeing gay things in the first season, ba-by!” he said, laughing. “If anybody was upset by gay things in the first season, prepare to be pissed off.”

Diane had a similar tone when responding to the show’s cancellation back in March. At the time, he described Season 2 as “GAY AF”, thanked fans for supporting Jay-Den, and promised to continue sharing behind-the-scenes footage celebrating the character.

As an openly gay Klingon who wants to become a doctor, Jay-Den offered a different take on a species usually defined by its warriors. His pacifism also cut against what fans expected from Klingon characters. Some viewers praised the change, while others argued it didn’t line up with the franchise’s established lore.

That back-and-forth fed into the larger debate around Starfleet Academy, which was review-bombed soon after it premiered, with critics calling the series too “woke.” When Paramount canceled the show in March 2026, it didn’t give a reason, though reports pointed to low viewership. Some fans and cast members have suggested Paramount’s new ownership was less interested in backing the show, but whether the culture-war criticism played any role remains speculation.

Diane hopes that future Star Trek shows will continue making room for characters whose backgrounds and experiences reflect the people watching.

“Include people, that’s the only thing that I hope for Star Trek moving forward," he said. "Include real people. People look so different. I look so different from you, I am so different from you, and you are different from me. I hope that we both can continue to see ourselves when we watch this TV show.”

His comments follow those of co-star Robert Picardo, who returned as the Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. As we previously reported, Picardo suggested that the political climate and hostility toward diversity shaped the reaction to the series. He also expressed hope that future projects would preserve the franchise’s values.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude with Season 2, leaving one more season for Jay-Den and his fellow cadets.

Not sure which is more dead: Star Trek or Star Wars at the moment.

Both killed by the same disease.

Pity.

@Sominan - I simply WON'T WATCH! The fact that they pushed the Black Alien Warrior race character to be GAY falls in line with the agenda of DEMASCULATING our representation characters and especially.... acting out what is DESTESTABLE to GOD!

They can pander to whatever audience they like and he can virtue signal till it makes him feel good about himself, but the LGBT crowd is not large enough to keep this franchise alive and it’s already “Dead, Jim.”

My main gripe with all of this stuff is always just "Why?". I dont watch Trek, or th MCU or whatever franchise, because I care about two characters dating, straight OR otherwise.

The romances in this kind of stuff is always the absolute least interesting part of the story to me.

I don't care who's dating who and whatever drama or turmoil is going on in their relationship.

FASELI - 10/24/2026, 11:54 AM
@CrimmLives03 - Really? The interpersonal relationships in Star Trek is part of the reason why they could get 200 plus interesting episodes out of a run. The will they won't theys, the dynamics of interspecies, cultural interactions and fully functional androids. No one would care for the likes of Dax, Riker Odo etc if we didn't know who they were or wanted to bump uglies with.

The newer ones suffer from being poorly written and ignoring the status quo and or established rules of the cannon.

@FASELI -

Im not saying I dont like learning about characters, I'm just saying i couldnt care less about their dating habits or romances.

I have no dog in this fight because my care for Star Trek is nonexistent, but it feels like when comments like this are said it almost always just like invokes the culture or even more that times can backfire. The Odyssey is an example of a recent project that was criticized for some reason for being “woke”but the movie just ended up being a success anyways, and most of the cast or team on. It didn’t lean into the culture wars in interviews, they just showed up and made results

[frick] off we weren't upset.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine made television history on October 30, 1995, with the episode "Rejoined".
The episode featured a romantic same-sex kiss between Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) and Lenara Kahn (Susanna Thompson). It stands as the first same-sex kiss in the Star Trek franchise's history and was a monumental moment for LGBTQ+ representation on American sci-fi television.

We watched this then and had no problems. There's fanning the flames and then there's starting the [frick]ing fire. Just stop. Enough with the gay shit or the hetro shit and just make a good Star Trek show.

Star Trek has always been Progressive or liberal or whatever stupid label you want to put on it. But the main point of the Star Trek isn't inclusion. That's where NuTrek gets it all wrong. Other than Picard S3, Strange New Worlds S1, and Lower Decks.. everything else has been garbage

I'll stick with Star Trek SNW. Too bad it's only one more season.

If they were smart, they would start another series with the TOS characters. Most have been cast in SNW

I’ve viewed this site since its inception, but, as one can see, I very rarely post. Here’s my issue with all of the agenda-pushing in modern entertainment. I’m all for representation, but I think “representation,” should actually reflect the reality of the representative proportion of society. I have zero issue with homosexuality, race, mixed race couples, etc. However, the percentage of these populations in entertainment far outsize their actual numbers in our society. Every commercial seems to have a mixed race couple when the actual numbers of mixed race couples is a very small percentage of our population. Same goes with pushing the homosexuality agenda. The proportion of homosexuals in society, while maybe larger now than in recent decades, does not reflect the actual proportion of society. I think this is why some people are putt off when it seem to be “crowbarred” into our entertainment. It’s not that they’re bigots, homophobes, or any of that agenda-driven vernacular. It’s that it feels as if it’s constantly being pushed on us and thrown in our face when most people are just looking for entertainment, not another political commercial.

I love how modern Hollywood's business model is to alienate and annoy it's target audience, then turn around and blame the same people for not watching and giving them their money when it fails. 🤣

I guess they still don't realize that not everyone is into their cuckold humiliation ritual fetish.

ST:SA was truly abysmal.

Crappy scripts, crappy character development, shitty cinematography, zero regard for its own continuity or canonical lore. 80% of the characters were gay and none of them had any decent defining character traits or moments. They killed off the only good character.
They made it for a 'new audience' that just didn't turn up and completely turned off the established fanbase.

This show can't end quick enough so that it can be completely forgotten.

I think the consensus view is that this franchise is dead.
I don’t t think people will be all that upset because nobodies invested in Star Trek anymore.
And they’re just shouting The Message into a void of non-viewership.

How to kill a franchise Step 10: After you destroy it, make sure you rub your fans nose in it and triple down on what you're doing.

That will get them back.

Seriously though, even the most progressive person has to identify the absolute whackos that aren't really in it for the right reasons. Like sometimes, these Hollywood people are just straight up weirdos. Obviously, even without any of this, the shows are unwatchable. If I was the studio, I would at least put the message out to stop fanning the flames. What is the point?

I love this so much.

It's the perfect microcosm of woke bullshit.

We're here and queer and we're gaying up this thing that wasn't gay to be extra gay despite the decades of loyal fans who never wanted and won't watch this.

Then they'll blame bigotry when nobody watches the latest season of Star Poof Academy.
