A Much Happier Alternate Ending For ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Has Been Revealed

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ended with the death of every major character, but one of the movie's writers has now revealed a considerably more positive take on how the story could have wrapped up...

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first spinoff movie released by Lucasfilm and was pretty damn great. Cassian Andor is now getting his own Disney+ TV series, and that's a testament to how memorable some of the characters were. The film did have a very bleak ending which saw pretty much everyone die by the time the credits rolled, but things could have been considerably different.

"The version prior to [mine] didn’t have everyone die," writer Chris Weitz has revealed. "As a matter of fact, it ended with a wedding. I think it was on the presumption that Disney wouldn’t allow characters to die with such abandon."

"I felt it was necessary because nobody ever mentions them or sees them again," he continued. "But also because we’ve done this whole sort of theme about sacrifice that it was appropriate that all of our main characters die."

He went on to explain that earlier versions of the script handled the Death Star in a very different way and there would have been some (unnecessary?) mystery about the Empire's weapon. "It wasn’t clear at the beginning of the movie that the Death Star was going to be the Death Star. It was just the sense [in] the Rebellion that something bad was going down and we need to find out about it. There was this developing sense of dread throughout the film."

Rogue One was plagued by problems behind the scenes and reshoots significantly changed the story. For example, Jyn Erso no longer faced off with a TIE Fighter - a scene which was prominent in the trailers. Despite this, it's fair to say that the darker ending was the best decision for the movie.

Rogue One was honestly an excellent film, I enjoyed the grounded and gritty take on the Star Wars universe that showed us what happened beyond the Skywalker saga.

@MusaTariq25 - @MusaTariq25 - hi, I'm dont want to pick a fight, I just want to drop a friendly argument here for people who dont really understand why people are so angry about star wars. That feeling you describe, about finding out what happens beyond the Skywalker saga and finding out how the plans were stolen: some of us got that same feeling you did, but in 1995. We learned about Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors, his kick ass FEMALE pilot, without whom he could not accomplish the things he did. Everything that people say we are missing from star wars we already have, they just didnt know it.

We are not saying the movie is bad, I ENJOYED IT, but at the same time, some of us quite literally can not enjoy that same feeling you did, because to us, it is a soft reboot. I envy the fact that in a way, YOU get more star wars, but I do not. You still get to have that feeling of "wow the story is not over, and theres so much more out there and I cant wait to find out."
Its not that I made up some story in my head about what SHOULD happen and didnt get it (which would be the true definition of a "fanboy crybaby" as kids these days say), it's that I have already been following what happened outside the Skywalker Saga for more than a quarter century. I've literally watched Han solos children grow up in real time. I know who stole the death star plans, and in a way, I STOLE THE PLANS, because it was a video game.

What Im saying is selfish, childlike, longwinded, ignorant and annoying. But after more than 25 years of loving a story, preparing to share that story with my young son, and then watch someone with no right cancel that story, rename it as false (when it's already fictional) and replace it with something else...I think that entitles a handful of us to at least gripe a little bit.

I hope you have fun finding out "what happens outside the Skywalker saga", I really do, but there are some of us who already did, and now we get made fun of for actually caring about it. It's a shame that they couldnt have just adapted that to film, because You and I could actually share that feeling in the theater together. Non readers would go to the theater either way because its star wars, just as they do now, and die hard fans would come out in droves.

I'm the 6th like on your post, because I miss that feeling yu have.

@hartley07 - Eh... I "grew up" with the old EU, now Legends, and I'm enjoying the heck out of the new stuff. It's new Star Wars for me. Those were some fun old stories, but I'm okay with new stories, even if they tread some of the same ground, especially one that's well-done and works as a direct prequel to the OT.

Honestly, one of the reasons I'm okay with Legends getting relegated to Legends and a new canon being created is because I did enjoy some of the stories, and yet they got messy fast. All these people who love Knights of the Old Republic I and II, but for me, they feel just bizarre, like some alternate timeline separate even from Legends, because they kind of curbstomp the amazing Tales of the Jedi, swapping out that unique aesthetic for a clone of the movies and creating more issues with story incompatibilities than they could try to (horribly) retcon. TotJ came first, and in that universe, the story KOTOR tries to tell isn't possible.

So it's nice to get a bit of "reboot." Get more stories, see an alternate take on things. It's still fresh to me, and some of the stories I like better. Some guys made the jump over, like Thrawn, who's been in some awesome stories (the novels are great).

But heck, I liked old Star Trek and have enjoyed the heck out of the new Star Trek films, too, and am sad it seems they might have stalled out. So maybe I'm not enough of a "purist."

@kgavrin - @kgavrin - I just really hate soft reboots. it's just so lazy. "I didnt like this part from the first one, so I'm gonna ignore it and change some stuff. whatever, no one will notice." or "meh, no one read the books" or "meh, George wasnt beholden to the books" even when episodes 1 2 and 3 were made specifically to line up with the books to maintain continuity.george couldve called the bad guys anything he wanted, but he used the term sith because it was in the EU first. that sounds "beholden" enough to me.

I also mean that it was completely unnecessary to throw away ALL the books. I TOTALLY AGREE that there are some REALLY DUMB stories, but they aren't series destroying foul ups. They probably couldve tossed some, but to toss EVERY SINGLE ONE before they even took stock of what films they could make to bring in old fans is completely mind boggling.
Disney, or whoever did it, felt it necessary to toss them all because the audience would be lost and couldnt possibly catch up on 40 years of past stories, but episode 7 leaves a giant 40 year gap anyway, which they now have to fill up with books and cartoons anyway that regular movie goers aren't going to follow anyway. it's completely insane. If they kept the books and just told NEW stories set a few years AFTER the books, flashbacks can catch the audience up on a few major things they need and it's fine. Episode 9 is going to be nothing but flashbacks anyway to fix what they did. Disney couldve sold copies of books THEY DIDNT EVEN HAVE TO WRITE, and new fans wouldn't have any idea anyway, and old fans, instead of boycotting, would show up in DROVES. you and I and everyone else here could ALL go to the theater and get that feeling we talked about in the above conversation.

Imagine what episode 7 8 and 9 wouldve made if they didnt piss off their biggest fans first by throwing an entire lifetime worth of lore in the trash just so they could crank out movies faster. It's just so sad. On princple, I'd rather watch the worst parts of the EU on film than watch academy award winning soft reboots. I've waited 25 years for a star wars themed land in Disney. I'm not going, because it's based in a version of star wars where my favorite stories and characters dont exist.

@Soos - But the celebrations in the Originals were to celebrate an exceptional achievement, and marrying isn't one of them. I like the prequels overall, but the one thing I didn't like was that poorly written love story

I loved Rogue one even with the tragic ending. It mad the movie what it was. If they wished these characters to have survived it should have been set in the resistance era.

@MyCoolYoung - I envy you.
in star wars today, you're either a racist chauvinist basement dweller who loves an outdated version of the story, or a filthy ignoratnt traitor who just started watching Disneys reboot cause you didnt know how to read 30 years ago.

Just take the high road and read the lord of the rings. lol

MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/21/2019, 6:06 AM
@MalseMarcel - lol I was always kinda indifferent I think. Star wars is this big behemoth and I always watched them with a "this it?" kinda reaction.

It doesn't help that I find it hard to get into older movies now with the effects being so much better.

Then I tried force awakens and couldn't get into it. Last jedi couldn't get into it but honestly I don't think I tried rogue one.. Strange.

How about this... Give me one star wars film I should totally watch and I'll try to watch it today and let you know how it was

@MyCoolYoung - the original unaltered limited edition on dvd is on ebay. give that a go so you can actually see it as the whole world saw it in 77. it came out during a time of antiheroes, so the idea of the classic fairy tale was refreshing.

@MyCoolYoung - you can read my comment to musiteriq25 towards the top of the page if you want my honest realistic opinion.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 3/21/2019, 7:22 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I have the same with older movies and also the ''this it?'' reaction. Lately I've watched movies like The Shining, North by Northwest and Taxi Driver, but none of them really struck me (probably because they are well praised and maybe that gives me too high expectations).

Anyway I don't really know what the Star Wars movie it is you must see. It's easy to say A New Hope, since it's the original or Empire Strikes Back, since it's considered the best. Another one could be Revenge of the Sith (by far the best prequel), but story-wise it functions much better if Attack of the Clones is watched first.

If I must advise to watch a Star Wars movie, I think it would be Rogue One. It's visually one of the best in terms of quality and special effects and it does capture the atmosphere of especially the originals best, and it can be watched seperate from the rest since it's a spin-off.

@MyCoolYoung - If you can, check out Solo, I think it's on Netflix. You don't have to have any other knowledge of Star Wars to "get it." Heck, you might even have a better time with it than people trying to compare the main actor to Harrison Ford (though I felt Alden Ehrenreich did a fine job and I'd love to see more of him).

It's basically just the story of a guy trying to get out of a rough life and make himself a new life, with a kind of wild west in space vibe.

@MalseMarcel - I thought I was the only one and I do admit expectations may play a part as well but I just don't be impressed.

Sometimes people really be having film school level knowledge and they're looking for something different than we are but I'm not going to pretend I'm looking for montages to say the movie was good.

@MyCoolYoung - You might be suprised, but I actually study Film (and music). It's feeling like the devil in class saying I like comic book movies and modern action movies in general. I understand classics and why people might see them like that, but in my eyes that doesn't make a movie good
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 3/21/2019, 8:43 PM
@MalseMarcel - thank you! I really hate the way people look down on comic book movies as if they don't explore real world themes, etc.

They dislike them in your class?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 3/22/2019, 3:55 AM
@MyCoolYoung - I cant say for certain they dislike cbms, but most of them like indie and arthouse movies. Luckily there were some that agreed that Mission Impossible Fallout was the best action movie of 2018
