BOX OFFICE: ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Flies Past FINDING DORY; New Domestic Champion of 2016

Despite not being the box office beast that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was last year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has still been very successful at the box office and is now the domestic champion of 2016.

Finding Dory swam past Captain America: Civil War to be the new domestic champion back in June, but now another Disney-distributed film has taken the crown from the Pixar sequel. Despite opening to $155 million back in December, the Star Wars flick has now surpassed Finding Dory ($486.3 million) and now stands at $488.3 million after taking in an additional $3.244 million yesterday.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is expected to finish in the top 5 movies this weekend at the box office while it faces competition from films such as Sing and Golden Globe-winner La La Land. The Star Wars flick is also expected to reach the historic domestic milestone of $500 million this upcoming holiday Monday. It is expected to finish overall with around $550 million. Pretty good for a spin-off/prequel.

Here is the Top 10 Highest Grossing Films at the 2016 Domestic Box Office as a reminder:

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($488.3 million)
2. Finding Dory ($486.3 million)
3. Captain America: Civil War (408.1 million)
4. The Secret Life of Pets ($368.4 million)
5. The Jungle Book ($364.0 million)
6. Deadpool ($363.1 million)
7. Zootopia ($341.3 million)
8. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.4 million)
9. Suicide Squad ($325.1 million)
10. Doctor Strange ($231.1 million)

Stay tuned for more box office updates!
