Thrawn is so popular that not even the non-canonisation of the Expanded Universe could keep the methodical Chiss away, Timothy Zahn returned with a new eponymously titled novel in 2017 and the character even appeared as a primary antagonist on the much loved animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Despite this, however, there are still those fans that long to see EU characters bleed into the movies, Thrawn included. While this may seem unlikely a recent piece of information has led some to wonder whether the Grand Admiral might appear in some capacity in JJ Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX.

While at Comic-Con Revolution Heir to the Empire writer Timothy Zahn revealed on his panel that while he is indeed under contract for two more Thrawn books they are currently in limbo while details for Star Wars: Episode IX were being finalized.
This could, of course, be a part of the usual process for any piece of work set in the Star Wars universe but with both Rebels and 2017's Thrawn set before A New Hope why would this second novel be impacted by JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio's film? And the idea of Thrawn showing up on the big screen is certainly a titillating one.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theatres on 20th December 2019.

What do you think? Are we liable to see Thrawn in Episode IX? Which extended universe characters would like to see enter the cinematic realm? Leave your thoughts below.

This is clickbait. Every piece of Star Wars lore will be held up by the movies so they don’t conflict on even the smallest details. I’m 99.99% sure Thrawn will not be in Episode IX.

@BreakTheCode - ikr? Even with that time difference, there's plenty that these stories can effect. Especially since the new trilogy is so dependent on the original trilogy continuity.

The problem with Thrawn is you are introducing a major new character the films haven’t introduced so late in the game

@LEVITIKUZ - I wouldn't worry these new films don't concern themselves with backstop so he will just be there and we as an audience just have to accept it.

I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the character but with the time frame. Episode 9 could still reveal things about the post-ROTJ era, and they don't want him to write anything that might contradict that. and Zahn isn't high enough on the Disney/Lucasfilm food chain to be given those details yet.

And I guarantee Thrawn won't be in 9. Save him for something he can shine in, not a side character that gets folded into the mix at the conclusion of a pre-existing trilogy.

I thought we already decided that the extended universe stuff is irrelevant. Unless it’s a cameo, he ain’t in the movie. No point confusing everyone just to please a few diehard fans.

Well, at this point, this last product from this failed trollogy can add whatever mix of characters they want. And more visuals, visuals, visuals. That's what some people love about this new Disney Sw products.

I don't know much about Thrawn, but if he was to turn up in Episode IX he'd have to be mighty old unless his race ages differently than humans.
