J.J. Abrams Not Committed To 2015 Release For STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

There's a kernel of insider info in The Hollywood Reporter's article on J.J. Abrams signing on to direct the next installment of the Star Wars franchise. Reportedly, Abrams could change the 2015 release date.

Ever since Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm, Star Wars has transformed from a dormant volcano into a raging lava inferno. As such, rumors and sequel theories have been red hot and free flowing but the most recent bit of concrete news is that J.J. Abrams will be directing the next major motion picture. But what about that 2015 release date? Buried in THR's report on the proceedings is a little kernel of intel which states, "Episode VII is set for release in 2015, but sources say Abrams has not committed to that release date, meaning the date could be changed if the development process requires it." Obviously, don't take this as confirmation but a change in release date is definitely in play and apparently at Abrams discretion. This could grow into something major or it could mean nothing, for right now it merits watching. The film slate for 2015 is already packed with blockbusters like The Avengers 2, Justice League, Ant-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 and will probably include more as yet unannounced projects. With a script from Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) the only other concrete fact, there's a real possibility that the release date could be pushed.

Abrams also has a third Star Trek film to produce as well as another Mission Impossible installment on his agenda (not to mention numerous television projects). More details as we have them.

I'd rather they take their time and make something great than to get another Phantom Menace.

The tight schedule had me scratching my head when the movie was first announced. By all means, push it back! To make 2015, he would have to have been involved in pre-prod since last year.

NEWSFLASH! Justice League has NOT been OFFICIALLY announced by WB. The 2015 date is but a rumor, no matter how strong. At this point there is (pending on how MOS does) greater chance that JL comes out at a later year than SW.

Oh, while Im at it, might I just add what a lame, predictable and unoriginal choice J.J.Abrams is? Not to mention that he's overrated...meh.

I've never expected it, anyway. He pushed Star Trek Into Darkness a year back - for a good reason, though - and with him officially on board, I've been expecting that. Well, to be honest, I've never seen the movie making it in 2015 from the very first place, anyway. They shouldn't rush it.

He better not change the year just so he can fit it around star trek 3

Especially since 2014 is going to have TASM2 and Cap 2...

I'll pass on both.

Not surprised.

I'm sure he's gonna want a say in the script.

After they change the date WB will definitely change there's too. Especially since they're waiting for MOS to come out to decide on who the JL director will be.

Guys, it's 2013, not even mid-2013. A movie takes a year to make...at most. WB is still on pace for a 2015 JL release if they so choose to. I just wish they would cast a new Superman.

I don't want Man of Steel attached to Justice League.

WB isn't rushing anything.

CavEl - 1/26/2013, 10:42 AM
@ Venom007 - Last time I check, Iron Man and Thor aren't DC characters. Marc Webb is just going to make the same movie which I will hate.

And I stand by my statement that Captain America was a cheesy POS and it was, arguably, Marvel's worst phase 1 movie(Along with Iron Man 2). The prospect of a man dressed a a bird doesn't make me think the second will be any less cheesy.

@ GordonShumway - That's just it, I'm a Superman fan, not a DC fan. I don't want Man of Steel tainted by what will be a shitty Justice League movie written by a shitty writer like Will Beall.

You want a Superman for Justice League...

I'm glad Abrams is doing episode VII, but he has too many other projects going on, which worries me. I want him to be fully committed to VII and Star Trek 3(to some extent).
