Perhaps one of the most disappointing things about movie sequels is the composer's tendency not to use the score from the original movie - or at least try and 'jazz it up' in some way. The X-Men franchise and the MCU are arguably both guilty of this crime, and while it has occasionally lead to the creation of even greater scores (see 2011's X-Men: First Class), there's something a little disheartening about not being to hear the iconic soundtrack from the original film.
John Williams' score for Star Wars is arguably the most iconic soundtrack of them all. It made its debut in 1977 with A New Hope, and has since continued to feature throughout the saga's many installments - forming an integral part of Star Wars franchise. Thankfully, it seems this trend will continue on this December with The Force Awakens. Williams recently told Vanity Fair that several fan-favorite themes will indeed be present in the sequel:
"There are some scenes where we do make reference to earlier thematic pieces. We haven’t done it yet, but we’re planning to do it. It’s something that I think will seem very natural and right in the moments for which we’ve chosen to do these kinds of quotes. There aren’t many of them, but there are a few that I think are important and will seem very much a part of the fabric of the piece in a positive and constructive way."
The legendary composer also expressed his admiration for director J.J. Abrams, claiming that he had had given him the freedom to sculpt his own score, and had only ever asked him to "just do [his] thing". How excited are you to hear that iconic theme music from your childhood this December? Do you think Williams' score for The Force Awakens could potentially even top his previous work?
