POLL/DISCUSSION: What Do You Think Of The New STAR WARS Title?

After months of rumors and speculation, yesterday we found out that the official subtitle of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars flick would be "The Force Awakens". Too simple/safe perhaps? Were you hoping for something a little more enigmatic? Have your say after the jump..

If there's one thing I've found after years of writing about movies, it's that sequel subtitles very rarely go down well at first. Remember the backlash for the likes of The Dark Knight Rises? Thor: The Dark World? Rise of the Dawn of the etc etc? It's only after they sink in and people get used to saying/reading them that they're accepted...usually anyway! "The Force Awakens" has so far been met with either indifference or negativity in most camps, but let's be honest folks, it could have been a LOT worse!

The title would seem to fit in with a lot of the rumored story details we've heard about, and suggests that after the events of Return Of The Jedi, the last remaining force-user (that'd be Luke Skywalker) did indeed go AWOL. His re-emergence will most likely awaken the force not only in himself, but another character (or several?) and the galaxy far, far away in general. It is a rather pedestrian title, but after Phantom Menaces and Attacks of the Clones it's not really surprising that Abrams and co. wanted to keep things simple. So what do you think? Vote below and then sound off in the usual place.

It's not bad. When you line it up next to the other titles it works quite well.

Still hate The Dark Knight Rises as a title.. and I liked the movie.

Here's a mock-up of the opening crawl, complete with new title, that I threw together last night and uploaded today. Obviously the content of the crawl itself isn't what's going to be in the finished film but I figured it might be good to have a preview of what the opening to the next Star Wars film may be like. It's still very rough, the star field is temporary and I'm not happy with the STAR WARS logo. Regardless, I hope you get a kick out of it.

I can't help thinking of Dune.

Anyone who knows their Star Wars would know that The Force can be manipulated in such ways. Kreia in 'Knights of the Old Republic II' even said that the death of the Force is possible by extreme measures. Obi-Wan Kenobi himself said Anakin would "leave it in darkness" if he went through with his revenge.

"Lol was the Force asleep?" is tragically ignorant. The Force can lie dormant, or be asleep, so the title is entirely logical since Luke was the last of the Jedi and all and *spoilers* Darth Vader died.

If they were gonna follow the subtitling format from the original and prequel trilogies it should have been "Awakening of the Force". Lucas has always been about the "of the"s, y'know "Return of the Jedi", "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith". Just sayin...

I like "The Dark Side Awakens".

After Ep6 no one thinks that the Force is "asleep"
but with Vader and Emperor gone where is the dark side?

Plus it's far more ominous.

The first title of the PT and OT trilogies have 3 words. What's different here is that while "The Force Awakens" is three words, "The Phantom Menace" and "A New Hope" referred to specific characters (Palpatine and Luke, respectively) whereas this appears to be a more general and broad title.

@Vadakin, I totally agree, my buddy and I were actually discussing that. I feel like it clearly doesn't follow the same pattern, yet I also feel like 'The Force Awakens' is as subtle as a donkey d**k in your tomato soup. If they wanted to get old fans excited and entice new fans 'The Living Force' would've been a much cooler title because
A). The Force was asleep? So how did these guys do flips and s*** while swinging around lightsabers this entire time. And
B). While vague, 'The Living Force' seems like it's introducing something new, but in reality is rooted in Qui-Gon Jinns teachings, meaning that it's canon. So the title would better reflect what this sequel trilogy is: a nod and and wink to long time fans, and something seemingly new for new fans. Also it's a 'grey jedi' teaching, so it introduces a nice twist on something we thought we knew

By the way this is not me saying I think that the movie will be crap, I trust the caliber of the cast and the director, however I don't think the title need be so damned generic.

So.. after Revenge of the Sith, the dark side actualy rule the galaxy for 30 years. After the Return of the Jedi, they sleep for 30 years? Man, the light side suck!

The jedi are weak and aren't ambitious enough to keep peace. The Sith will always be stronger because they aren't afraid to take action and do what is necessary to win.
