SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Star Donald Glover Says He's Been "Scanned" By Lucasfilm

Star Wars has shown a willingness in the past to digitally recreate characters on screen, and based on what Donald Glover said recently, they will continue to use this uncanny technology in the future...

Donald Glover has become one of the hottest names in the entertainment business. Between his award-winning series Atlanta, incredible music career, and roles in summer blockbusters, Glover has a lot going his way.

Apparently, you can add virtual immortality to that list too. In an interview with The New Yorker, Glover said his likeness has been saved in a Lucasfilm scan that sounds like something out of a sci-fi story. The actor explains:

“I’m scanned into ‘Star Wars’ now, my face and body...Who’s to say that at some point they won’t take that scan and say, ‘Let’s make another movie with Donald. He’s been dead for fifteen years, but we can do whatever we want with him.’ ”

While this seems like Lucasfilm is really playing the long game, these CGI scans aren't just for recreating dead actors like we saw in Rogue One with Grand Moff Tarkin. This technology can also be used to make sure actors look a certain age forever, which is still pretty weird but perhaps a bit less ethically questionable.

Since Disney is planning on making Star Wars movies forever, it doesn't really come as a surprise that they are using this kind of technology on their actors. Between Princess Leia and Tarkin in Rogue One, it looks like Lucasfilm was only testing the waters with digital recreation. It will be interesting, and a little scary, to see just how far the company goes in the future.

What's your take on these CGI likeness scans? Comment below!

I can't wait to see Donald Glover's likeness keep making appearances in Star Wars well into my 90's.. mind you by then our conscientiousness will all be uploaded digitally onto computers, where we will freely roam the web FOREVER, after the inevitable robot uprising of course.

Sorry for I went down a rabbit hole there.. I've had too much coffee today

That’s cool. Who knows what they’ll be able to do in the future.

I actually don't think this is a bad thing considering the performers are consenting. Imagine how great it'll be in 100 years to see Harrison Ford still making a brief appearance as Han Solo.

Yep. He's been "scanned" by me, too. Several times, up and down.

Disney has an unhealthy obsession with this face scan shit. Tarkin and Leia looked terrible and the majority of the de-aging they do in other movies can be spotted from a mile away. They need to stop acting like they've perfected it.

Why does nobody seem to understand they do this in every movie with a lot of CGI. They need a CGI double for these characters for any visual effects shots so how else are they going to create model other than scanning them? Relax. They're not doing it SPECIFICALLY so they can have a CGI performance like Tarkin or Leia.

@Boyle360 - So you say. True that they're preparing for the future, but don't suspect that this won't be used for any deceased actors down the line.
