There had been persistent rumors that Daisy Ridley might be in talks to return as Star Wars sequel trilogy lead Rey "Skywalker" for a future project set in the galaxy far, far away, and the news was finally confirmed during Star Wars Celebration London around this time last year.

Ridley will reprise her role for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie, which will be set a whole fifteen years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know that Rey will be a "powerful Jedi master" running her own training academy when we catch up with her.

While speaking to Empire, Ridley discussed her return and explained why she agreed to play Rey again after the divisive reaction to The Rise of Skywalker.

“I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, I’m an adult now. I certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, I’ve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like it’s a different thing this time. There’s just a lot of joy with me and these films. Honestly, if I wasn’t excited, I wouldn’t have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.”

The Rise of Skywalker was a moderate box office hit, but it was the worst-reviewed film of the sequel trilogy, and you'd be hard pushed to find a Star Wars fan who would rate it particularly highly! For many, the movie was so disappointing that it tarnished the entire trilogy.

With this in mind, was returning to the franchise a difficult decision for Ridley?

“It wasn’t,” she says. “I didn’t say yes right away, Kathy [Kennedy] was like, ‘Take as long as you need.’” Not that it took that long to say yes. “Why wouldn’t I [do it]? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character – like, can I even remember how to play her? It’s an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what’s changed for me and what’s changed for her.”

The Rey-focused Star Wars movie is still untitled, but both "A New Beginning" and "New Jedi Order" have been rumored.

Production is expected to begin in the UK later this year. A recent rumor claimed that casting is currently underway for Rey's two Jedi apprentices (possibly her children) and an unnamed villain. We're still not sure if Rey will be the only sequel trilogy character to appear.

I can acknowledge that the sequel trilogy being mid doesn't directly fall on her and more lands on the decision to not identify the story in advance but I do not have really any interest in this

@Evansly - All three trilogies could’ve benefited from being better planned out. For all the bollocks of Lucas planning out the prequels, he changed a lot from what they originally looked like, even altering Ep. 3 drastically halfway through. But the sequels suffered the most from this, mainly due to them giving into pressure, hiring too many cooks and trusting none of them except the one with the least creativity to them all; Abrams.

I still [frick] with them, though. The backlash they get, like anything Star Wars, is way OTT.

@Evansly - honestly , I feel they should have gone with Duel of Fates

It felt like a more appropriate ending to the study of the trilogy instead of just bringing back The Emperor (as good as Ian McDiarmid was) to tie the whole saga together.

@TheVisionary25 - I haven't watched the last one, don't really want to spend my time on something I know will frustrate me!

I just want them to go to the Old Republic. Like I get it Luke Skywalker is important but I am so sick of everything being set just a few years after RotJ. There are other time periods with very interesting stories they can pull from instead of making new stories for characters people didn't really connect with.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/9/2024, 10:38 AM
@Evansly - I think it’s unfair to say that people didn’t connect with them…

You might not have but doesn’t mean that others did not.

There’s a lot of people that did , just see the amount of Rey or Kylo cosplayers at conventions

I would like them to focus on other time periods aswell such as The Acolyte is doing with The High republic…

If that’s a success then I can see them having the confidence to branch out more.

Evansly - 4/9/2024, 10:49 AM
@TheVisionary25 - True, maybe I didn't connect was well as I did with the OT and Prequels just do to what was going on and it was easier for me to connect with the content.

I am glad they are finally branching out but fear they will decide not to go back ot other periods if this one doesn't perform well. I just hope it's more in line with the quality of Andor over Obi-wan and Ahsoka

Kylo was a cook character, wasn't his death kind of lame though?

He was definitely my favorite character of the trilogy.

Fingers crossed it all turns out for the best man!!.

Can't wait. I think she's great in the role. Last Jedi was a miss, but I love the first two of the Disney trilogy.

TFA and The Last Jedi were the first 2

@cubrn - "People" always talk about wanting something new, and then when it's done they rebel against it. TLJ was probably the best of the 3, and the only one that tried to be its own thing...we saw how that went down. I'm not saying it was a masterpiece, the criticisms of the film imo are as valid as the other 2 films, but TROS was just atrocious to me. If I'd been in a theatre I would have left. TFA was copy and paste. As much as I love Poe memes not sure why they stuck with him so much, and equally baffled as to why there was 0 payoff for Finn. He joined a long line of lines (Jean! Scott!...Mulder! Scully!) that just didn't feel earned. A lot didn't feel earned to me really and it seems indicative of a trend in modern filmmaking where only portions of a film are good and the rest is spaghetti in flight towards a wall. I'll still give the new franchise the benefit of the doubt, maybe they've figured out the formula to some extent, but I wonder. I agree the films probably resonate with some more than others, but it doesn't change the films themselves. Thank goodness for the CW revival and spinoffs. I feel like they had to do more to do with saving SW, along the RO's and Andors of the world.

@The1st - The trouble with something like Star Wars, is there is a high bar to hit, because of the nostalgia and because of all the additional content that Disney set aside when they took over Lucasfilm. Now that is a decision I do understand, given the time between the original trilogy and the new one, it just made it unfeasible to follow the "legacy" plan, and I think it was stated that they just threw out what George himself had written.

Like others have said though, they seemed to launch into a new trilogy without any clear plans or direction, now whilst that is something George did to a degree, it was his universe and seemingly he did have some framework in place, even if it did change.

What we saw from the sequels was just so badly executed, a first film that was almost a copy of ANH, a second film by a film maker who just wants to "subvert expectations", but as Sam Witwer said " Last Jedi , to me, felt like a movie made by a guy who hadn't quite done his homework. I think Rian Johnson's a talented guy, but Bruce Lee didn't develop Jeet Kune Do without learning Kung Fu first. You can't reinvent Star Wars without knowing Star Wars first "

Overall it just led to a set of incoherent films which lacked decent character development.

So, how will an actist-director handle Star Wars? What we need is geekness, not activism.

Shouldve let The Danies do this.

@vectorsigma - Lucas was also a political activist, Palpatine was famously George Bush while Valorum was Clinton.

When people say "they don't want politics" in their movie it always sounds to me more like "I don't like these particular politics in movies".
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 4/9/2024, 10:22 AM
@vectorsigma - What activism has there been in Star Wars? Or do you chalk up activism to hiring woman in staring roles? And also, when did Star Wars stop being geeky?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 4/9/2024, 10:26 AM
@Blergh - They love politics in these movies, just not when it’s in favour of anyone that’s a minority, female or gay.
Blergh
Blergh - 4/9/2024, 10:48 AM
@FireandBlood - kinda feels that way, pretty visible when Sound of Freedom was released. That movie wasn't really what Caviziel promised. It wasn't about adrenochrome or the evil democrats eating babies, but that rallying cry alone made conservatives storm theatres and act like "it's the movie THEY don't want you to see".
I went and watched it (don't judge me, I enjoy watching all types of movies, I also watched Amerigeddon) and was kinda shocked at how tame it was. But nevertheless the culture war BS around it continued, suddenly the right loved movies being political.

I don't mind movies being political, even if I tend to fall on liberal spectrum I don't mind more conservative movies. Filmmakers have opinions and will carry them over in their stories.

That outrage over SW suddenly being political is more a sign of our times having become more "empire-friendly" than ever.

@FireandBlood - you are putting words in my mouth and try to create a narrative that I hate minorities, females or gay people in movies.

You arent even paying attention when I said The Daniels, you know, where half of them is openly gay.

I just feel that these kinds of directors, as Iger has said, are more focused on their messages rather than entertaining.

Messages aside, these kinds of movies is not her forte. Like Shamaylan directing Avatar.
