STAR WARS: Don't Expect Any Major Movie Announcement's During Lucasfilm's D23 Panel Today

Lucasfilm will hold a panel at D23 later today, but a new report suggests we won't be getting any Star Wars movie news as Kathleen Kennedy remains unwilling to give the green light to any planned projects.

While the Star Wars franchise continues going from strength to strength on Disney+ thanks to the likes of The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the future of the franchise in theaters remains uncertain.

Solo: A Star Wars Story's underwhelming box office performance led to Lucasfilm scrapping future spinoffs. The negative response to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also appeared to derail the studio's plans, and Rian Johnson's trilogy appears to be nowhere close to happening.

Meanwhile, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss shelved their trilogy plans after signing a lucrative deal with Netflix.

For a time, it looked like a Rogue Squadron movie from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was up next, but it's been all quiet on that front these past couple of years. We're not sure what's happening, though the prevailing theory is that creative differences may have come into play (if so, that's majorly embarrassing after that pricey announcement video).

Taika Waititi is believed to be working on a movie, of course, but if Thor: Love and Thunder was any indication, his approach to filmmaking may not gel with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's incredibly specific vision for the franchise.

In his latest Puck newsletter (via SFFGazette.com), former The Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni warned Star Wars fans not to expect any news about a new movie at this weekend's D23.

As you can see, it's said that Kennedy isn't ready to give any of those rumoured big screen projects, including Damon Lindelof's, the green light at this point in time. As a result, we won't be heading to that Galaxy Far, Far Away in theaters until after 2024 at the soonest, and that means there will have been a huge gap between The Rise of Skywalker and whatever comes next.

It's hard to believe Disney is happy with that, but at least Star Wars continues to make a positive impact on the small screen.

How about a good star wars movie every now and then instead of regularly scheduled 💩?

@ProfessorWhy - Make them feel special,like every 3 years.

Marvel should do the same go back too two movies a year and two shows.

The problem is Disney needs content for Disney Plus and they churn out as much as possible. The movies and shows are suffering for it,with crappy CGI and writing.

@ProfessorWhy - There hasn't been a good SW movie since the 1980's, so why would you expect it now?

Consequences of their own actions chasing them right now, i'm afraid...

@Doomsday8888 - What a weird and unnecessary scene for a Star Wars movie.

No surprises there. I really doubt any of the Star Wars movies in the works now will see the light of day. First movie on the big screen I expect is Episde X a decade from now.

Just more crappy shows.

@marvel72 - I’d say they had more successes than misses with their shows

Good:
-Rebels
-Mandalorian
-Clone Wars S 7
-Bad Batch

Okay:
-Obi-Wan Kenobi

Bad
-Resistance
-Book of Boba Fett

@MrDandy - I wouldn't call Resistance and BOBF bad, but they are definitely one of Star Wars' lesser shows.

@bkmeijer1 - I really enjoyed PARTs of Book of Boba Fett but the sun of those parts added up to an unfocused story that seemed to lose interest in their titular character about halfway through the show.

I detested Resistance and to this day it’s the only piece of on-screen Star Wars media that I’ve been unable to finish.

@MrDandy - yeah, Resistance really isn't a show for everybody.

As for Boba Fett, I agree. It really had a weak structure in my opinion, especially using the bacta tank as framing device was an odd choice.

i don't even care for star wars... the "This is The Way" show was good, Reva was great but that doesn't mean i actually care a ton about star wars...

i enjoy listening and reading about raging fanboys when a show is not good. That's more entertaining.

@Lokiwasright - ''i enjoy listening and reading about raging fanboys when a show is not good''

Same. Some criticisms have become a form of entertainment of itself. It's okay to have fair criticism, but I can't take raging (and using words like woke) seriously.

@bkmeijer1 - Majority of people on the internet have no fair criticisms but result to using “woke” to make a poinr

Good. Let the movies rest for a bit. Star Wars films should feel like events anyways. It seems to be their having more success on TV anyway. Let the Filoni/Faverou series build to a Heir to the Empire Trilogy to cap off the series.

I honestly feel like she isn't going to greenlight any Star Wars movie till she actually resigns from Lucasfilm. Her contract was renewed till 2024, so it would make sense that she not even bother during her tenure to produce another Star Wars film and just build upon content on Disney+.

@HWestRE420 - I hope they don't renew her contract. The only worthwhile stuff they've produced since they've acquired the property is Mandalorian, IMO. BoBF wasn't THAT bad, but the best episodes of the series were still the Mando ones.
