The second the words "Star Wars" appear on the big screen and you hear John Williams' iconic theme song kick off, it's hard not to be immediately overwhelmed with happiness with J.J. Abrams' long anticipated movie and the fact that it takes us back to a Galaxy Far, Far Away. However, what follows is even more incredible, and while repeat viewings will no doubt be needed to fully decide on this, I honestly think that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the best instalment in the franchise to date. Better than The Empire Strikes Back? As much as I hate to see anything dethrone my all-time favourite movie, I think so!

Returning to The Force Awakens though, and it's a hard one to fault. If I had to zero in on anything, it's that the motion capture characters (specifically Supreme Leader Snoke and Maz Kanata) look a little questionable at times, though that takes nothing away from how great they are thanks to the performances of Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong'o. There's also an awful lot of step up for Star Wars Episode VIII and a long list of unanswered questions about what happened between the events of Return of the Jedi and this movie, some of which will quite likely be answered in future spinoffs or tie-in material. It's hard to be too critical of that though, especially when it serves to make the anticipation for the follow-ups to The Force Awakens even more exciting, and it's not like we're going into this movie unaware of the fact that it's part one of three! Even so, it works wonderfully as a standalone piece.

The new cast members are absolutely fantastic. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega are perfect as the new leads, with both of them instantly coming across as extremely likeable and delivering stellar performance (seeing as she's a relative newcomer, Ridley is particularly impressive). I dare say that these two are even more compelling than both Anakin and Luke ever were and there are some great surprises in store in regards to how their respective stories unfold. Oscar Isaac is also excellent as Poe Dameron, and I just wish we had seen even more of him here. Gwendoline Christie also doesn't get to make much of an impact as Captain Phasma, but with Kathleen Kennedy having already confirmed that she'll be back in Star Wars Episode VIII, there's clearly plenty of time to make up for that. Domhnall Gleeson hams it up a little as General Hux, but it works really well in all fairness, especially in a scene where he addresses the First Order's troops. Speaking of which, it's to Abrams' credit that he's made the Stormtroopers scary again. These are no longer the bumbling buffoons who can't shoot straight; they're nasty, vile, and imposing figures who kids - and maybe even adults - will fear.

By far the highlight for me though was Adam Driver. His Kylo Ren is a fascinating and layered character, and possibly the most interesting Star Wars villain to date. Sometimes conflicted and other times a petulant child, the way he develops over the course of the movie is a lot of fun to watch, and he may just be one of the best big screen villains of all-time, especially when so many blockbusters have baddies who are so easily forgotten and fail to make any sort of impact.

When it comes to the story, it's obviously hard to say much without dropping any spoilers, but I will say that it's a movie which is going to make you laugh way more than you'll expect, be on the edge of your seat during amazing aerial and ground battles (and one of the franchise's best lightsaber duels as well), and probably shed a few tears too depending on how emotionally invested you get in the story and how big of a fan you are! Regardless of whether you're a newcomer to this world or a seasoned veteran, you WILL love Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams has done what we all hoped and made a truly great Star Wars movie, and it's clear that a lot of love has gone into making this because he too is a fan. Can Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow top his effort? Right now, I'm not sure they'll even be able to match this movie, but as long as they come close, this new trilogy should still be amazing after a perfect opening.

Thank you, J.J. Abrams.

I liked it a lot but I felt they rehashed Ep IV and V way too much. Also, the story was held together by a lot of coincidences. That said, I think they did a great job.

It was very good...not great, much room for the series to improve as a great foundation has been laid.

Without spoiling anything, I was a little disappointed that they recycled so much of the plot from ANH and ESB. Watching it, I was like, "I've seen this movie." Everything else was wonderful.

Without spoilers, Kylo Ren was one of the best parts of the movie. He's exactly what Anakin could have been in the prequels. EXCELLENT character.

4 star movie for me. It felt like I was watching A New Hope again. The movie was still a lot of fun. I loved the humor, the action was great, and the visuals were beautiful. The new cast were all great with BB-8 being too adorable. Star Wars is back, baby!

Will not see this again...think I will spare myself of further disgust.
Music sucked too...ending was total fail.

Without spoilers, Kylo Ren is the lamest villain yet. And don't expect to be blown away by Snoke.

Disagree, with the review. It's good to see the movies going again, but nothing mind blowing or epic even. I think a lot of the people in the theater I was watching it at wanted to cheer because they had waited so long to see it and felt dumb not doing it. It felt very forced laugh out loud. Plot was weak, cgi looked awful, not a new movie but more of .5 from the originals. The reviewer must have grown up with the new movies

The film was somewhat of a remake, but hey, you don't take huge risks when you're trying to restart the biggest franchise of all time. The movie was clearly meant to recapture everything that made the OT great, and which the PT provided frustratingly little of.

The tentpoles of the new trilogy were dug in firmly though, and I can see this saga continuing for many more films.

4 stars

For me it's up there with Empire Strikes Back and that's my favorite film
It's an amazing entry into the franchise.

Nice review.

This was a good film but let's stop with these 5's. This is a 3 or3.5 out of 5 stars film. No where near a 5. Way better than all prequels but not better than ep 4 or 5.

Empire by far is the best of the bunch . I still feel ANH and ROTJ are better , but this fits along with them and is certainly better than those awful prequels . Lots of questions to be answered in this one but if left me wanting more , which I like . And that ending ...wow . Kinda had a BB feel to it .

Laying it on too thick Wilding.

Though, having yet to see the movie, I can tell when people in the comments are more about voicing an agenda rather than an actual opinion. This is one such comments section. I am not sure what said agenda is other than the anti-Disney faction, but these are not comments of people who have really had time to think about the movie ...or maybe have not even seen it yet. So far, the biggest criticisms in this section has been "too much like A New Hope" which is a bit easy isn't it? That was the biggest concern, next to being like the prequels, and thus the first thing anybody with an agenda would hurl at said movie. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe these are all valid opinions with no ulterior motive, but they are not being written as such. The bitter sub-text is just too easy to pick up.

An alternative to this oddly negative comment section is that there is probably a section of the fan base who had an EXACT idea of what they thought the film would be, but did not meet those predictions. From what I understand, some characters don't serve the role we expect. While having that as a surprise is great for most fans, there is just a good portion who do not like to be surprised.

Another theory is that there have been a vocal minority who are against diversity in this Star Wars film. I have seen having main characters be a woman and a black man being used as a reason why this movie would be terrible. With the rise in menism as of late and the fact that Rey is apparently a strong female character, I can see that as another reason to bandy about this particular agenda against TFA.

Have to laugh at the naysayers. Most of 'em will happily sit through any of the recycled superhero movies Marvel churn out year after year, and SOME similarities to a New Hope mean TFA receives heated backlash? Despite the fact that the new characters had completely different motivations, and the main plot and narrative was nothing like any previous Star Wars movie.

Anyway, different strokes for different snokes I guess. I didn't feel any of the humor was forced (as it so often is in Marvel movies.. and I'm not a Marvel hater at all I'm just making an observation) and laughed heartily. I thought the tone was just right.

I think many of you hardcore fans thought this was gonna change your life or something. It's a movie that many of you built up bigger than it actually was in your heads. Go watch it a second time and a third time and it'll get better.
And BTW, every franchise that has 3 or four movies out has recycled material, recycled themes. That's what makes it a sequel. F&F, Terminator, Transformers, Star Trek,....
