STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER - Rey Goes Dark In Stunning New D23 Trailer

We thought we'd have to make do with a few low-res screenshots of the new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage that screened at D23 over the weekend, but luckily for us it's now been officially released online!

The trailer starts with a recap of the previous films in the Skywalker Saga before bringing us up to date with Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren, BB-8 and the rest of the new characters. There's quite a bit of awesome new footage here, but all anyone is going to be talking about is that shot of "Dark Rey".

Has the heroic Jedi really gone to the dark side, or is this simply some kind of vision of what might have been?

Check out the special look below along with an updates synopsis and let us know what you think in the comments.

Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams join forces once again to take viewers on an epic journey to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the riveting conclusion of the seminal Skywalker saga, where new legends will be born and the final battle for freedom is yet to come. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in U.S. theaters on December 20.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong’o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, and Billy Dee Williams. The movie will be with us this December.

1) She looks way older.
2) That's not what I pictured when I heard double-bladed lightsaber. 😐 That sword
looks terrible.

No way she joins the dark side. They kept teasing that in The Last Jedi's trailers, that's what they are doing here. She'll bring balance to the force. That's her purpose.

The score gave me chills, as always. Movie looks fun.

I wasn't the biggest Star Wars fan growing up, but did enjoy the original Trilogy as a kid, so I liked Force Awakens, but was bored during Last Jedi.

I think it would have been fun to get a Buddy Cop type movie with Finn and Poe, just going around and having fun, getting into fist fights and bar brawls..............!!!

Star Wars fans are unbelievable sometimes. They spend 4 years complaining about the last 2 films and as soon as the trailer for the 3rd comes out everyone talks about how they're crying with joy in the comments. Like.....make up your damn mind.

@Nightwing1015 - Maybe they are not the same fans that complained?

I'm sure Adam Driver will be great as always, but the main trio felt so ill-defined in the first 2 films that it feels weird they're already getting a send-off.

@tmp3 - @tmp3 - I felt the same. Yes, the trailer looks cool but, the story of a generation? really? we barely know these characters, i dont feel nothing about them to send them off...
I know this site loves Disney, but i think Disney sank Star wars

@WakandanQueen - Maybe not but I find it strange that there are none of those complaining fans in the comments at all.

@Nightwing1015

Complaints like this make no sense to me. How can you, or anyone for that matter, blame an entire fanbase on inconsistent attitudes? Fanbases are not some hive-mind that all do the same thing and have the same opinions and complaints.

Did it occur to you that the people excited for Episode 9 are not the same people that were complaining about Episodes 7 and 8? People have their own opinions, man.

I hope Rey turns bad/dark and kills everyone and ends the series, lol.

@thing94 - There's worse ways the Skywalker Saga could end.

I wouldn't mind your outcome at all, though.

@CorndogBurglar

I know that fanbases are not a hive mind. But I find it hard to believe that all the people complaining about the trilogy so far are just absent when it comes to the new trailer. Those fans didn't just disappear.

I’m just glad it’ll be easy to get tickets the first day since all of the Last Jedi haters have insisted for a year and a half that they’re “done” with Star Wars. :)

Theory: We find out that Rey is the reincarnation of Padme, Palpatine possesses Rey, Anakin comes back and possesses Kylo, they fight, Anakin has to kill "Padme/Rey" to destroy Palpatine, in the end Anakin and Padme are together as force ghosts and Kylo is left with a dead Rey and redeemed in the light.
Yes it sounds that stupid, but you just watch and see... I do not put any level of stupidity past this Disney-owned Lucasfilm.
