STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Opens With $175.5 Million, A Notable Decline From The Previous Two Chapters

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ruled over the competition at the North American box office this weekend, but the movie didn't debut anywhere near as strongly as The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just broke the record for the third biggest December opening of all-time, but with a launch of $175.5 million at the North American box office, the movie has fallen short of the last two chapters in the Skywalker Saga. The Force Awakens holds the record for the best December debut with $248 million, while The Last Jedi is in second place with $220 million.

As you can see, that means The Rise of Skywalker was behind its predecessor by nearly $45 million!

A $175.5 million opening weekend is by no means a bad thing, of course, but you have to wonder whether Disney will take this into account while addressing the future of the franchise.

As The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi opened further away from Christmas, box office analysts believe that the biggest test for this finale will be over the holidays when moviegoers are free to head to theaters (rather than doing last-minute shopping and the like). Overseas, The Rise of Skywalker earned $198 million, a figure also behind the rest of this Star Wars trilogy.

Mixed reviews and a B+ CinemaScore are some big challenges facing the movie right now, while a $300 million production budget - not including marketing - means it needs to make a lot of money!

I used to think the sequel trilogy was a tragedy, but now I realize, it’s a [frick]ing comedy.

YIKES.

So that means Rise of Skywalker kind of underperformed this weekend. Yeah, 176 million is great for any other movie and still a shit ton of money, but that's 45 million less than The Last Jedi. And I believe (someone can correct me) that the predictions last week for this film were in the close to 195 to 200 mil range, so 20 or so mil less than predictions isn't a good sign either. The heads at Disney have to be a little disconcerted by this not reaching predictions, especially with all the marketing that went into this movie and the fact that it was being hyped as the end of the saga. Seems like the mixed reception to this movie is already having a big impact. And, per the article below, the multiplier is a little lower than expected, potentially indicating issues ahead for the movie's legs.

@regularmovieguy - "I personally would feel pretty depressed if I was in the new Star Wars movies"
lmfao, Adam Driver's one of the best actors working right now and he's in the new Star Wars movies, while this guy gave the worst performance in The Mandalorian by a mile and is only working because his dad's famous (and his grand-dad's a legendary director)

@tmp3

Haha Adam Driver will be untouched by this series, he was excellent. For the most part the actors don’t have anything to be ashamed of, they aren’t the creative force behind the movies.

I don’t think I’ve seen this dude in Mandolorian yet but Favreau is absolutely friends with Bobby. Wouldn’t be hard to assume thats how he got the role.

You know LucasFilm/Disney is going to give him the business.

So... the end of the Skywalker saga might not even hit a billion worldwide, despite Episode 7 having hit $2 billion.
