During Anime Expo Lite this week, a panel for Star Wars: Visions gave us a special first look at the upcoming anthology series. Premiering on Disney+ on September 22, Star Wars: Visions is a collection of stories from the galaxy far, far away told through the unique perspective of some of the world's most talented anime creators.
The series will consist of nine episodes created from seven different studios. They are:
- Kamikaze Douga – The Duel
- Geno Studio (Twin Engine) – Lop and Ochō
- Studio Colorido (Twin Engine) – Tatooine Rhapsody
- Trigger – The Twins
- Trigger – The Elder
- Kinema Citrus – The Village Bride
- Science Saru – Akakiri
- Science Saru – T0-B1
- Production IG – The Ninth Jedi
Each of the episodes are not only unique in visual aesthetic, but in tone as well. "There are so many genres at play," teased Lucasfilm executive producer Joshua Rimes. "Big and bold, romantic and sweeping, funny and comedic."
Tatooine Rhapsody, for example, is described as a "rock opera style film." The story is about a band with a dream to make it big, and also features appearances from Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. The Duel is a love-letter to the franchise told in black and white but with splashes of color for certain elements. The Twins puts a spin on some hallmark Star Wars motifs as it follows a new set of twins born into the dark side.
With Star Wars already drawing so much inspiration from Japanese mythology, seeing these new stories further explore that culural heritage should result in some unique and exciting adventures. Check out the special look at Star Wars: Visions that was shared during Anime Expo Lite. The full panel is available to watch from July 5-16 at the official Anime Expo site.
Star Wars: Visions will debut on Disney+ on September 22, 2021.
