During Anime Expo Lite this week, a panel for Star Wars: Visions gave us a special first look at the upcoming anthology series. Premiering on Disney+ on September 22, Star Wars: Visions is a collection of stories from the galaxy far, far away told through the unique perspective of some of the world's most talented anime creators.

The series will consist of nine episodes created from seven different studios. They are:

  • Kamikaze Douga – The Duel
  • Geno Studio (Twin Engine) – Lop and Ochō
  • Studio Colorido (Twin Engine)  Tatooine Rhapsody
  • Trigger  The Twins
  • Trigger  The Elder
  • Kinema Citrus  The Village Bride
  • Science Saru – Akakiri
  • Science Saru – T0-B1
  • Production IG  The Ninth Jedi

Each of the episodes are not only unique in visual aesthetic, but in tone as well. "There are so many genres at play," teased Lucasfilm executive producer Joshua Rimes. "Big and bold, romantic and sweeping, funny and comedic."

Tatooine Rhapsody, for example, is described as a "rock opera style film." The story is about a band with a dream to make it big, and also features appearances from Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt. The Duel is a love-letter to the franchise told in black and white but with splashes of color for certain elements. The Twins puts a spin on some hallmark Star Wars motifs as it follows a new set of twins born into the dark side.

With Star Wars already drawing so much inspiration from Japanese mythology, seeing these new stories further explore that culural heritage should result in some unique and exciting adventures. Check out the special look at Star Wars: Visions that was shared during Anime Expo Lite. The full panel is available to watch from July 5-16 at the official Anime Expo site.

Star Wars: Visions will debut on Disney+ on September 22, 2021.

Kinda expected it to be retellings of Skywalker Saga moments in new styles, but original stories are welcome as well. Especially so soon, since I expected a 2022 release.

@bkmeijer - Damn now that would have been disappointing 😂 for me anyway, I always wanted this to be original stories.

@JohnCastillo - I'm 100% happy for an original story, but I too have dreamed of an animated Star Wars series that is a long form retelling of the entire Skywalker Saga from, from Menace to Rise, in animated form.

Maybe similar to Clone Wars. Don't get me wrong, I love each Saga in some ways, their own way, but they all have very different aesthetics. My kids hate the originals because how slow paced it is and dated it looks, my wife hates the prequels because of the over reliance on cgi that didn't age well and the cast, and I can't get them to watch a marathon with me.

I just want a Skywalker Saga that is tonally consistent from start to finish, and have Feloni do it so he can flesh out each Saga like he did Clone Wars. Have 9 seasons, each season takes on one of the films, 12 episodes that are an hour long.

@bkmeijer - I know it's entirely redundant and unnecessary cuz we literally have the movies and they will never green light a production just to do the same story, but I've wanted an animated Skywalker Saga too. It's never gonna happen though.

@ElricReturns - I was thinking more reimagined moments. So not one on one adaptations, but things heavily inspired by.

Closest one on one animated shorts we do already have (sort of):

@ElricReturns - Ok I get what you mean now, and that sounds absolutely brilliant… even though I think the prequels and sequels are crap.. the prequels at least have a good story on paper but executed terribly. That would be a good way of making the story more accessible to everyone, just make it a series, 3 seasons each era.. animated so it isn’t too expensive. But it’s a dream at this point since there is 0 chance of them doing it.

@ElricReturns - Yes. If they retold the entire Skywalker Saga, and let Filoni and or Favreau fix things I would totally be down for it. Imagine the Jar Jar story being explored, him actually being a rival sith. Or the sequel Trilogy essentially getting completely overhauled. Or, dare I say it, the Legends material adapted as an animated series. Imagine after the Bad Batch you got the Yuuzhan Vong. So many stories you could tell with the Clone Wars/Rebels/Bad Batch engine.

Looks awesome! Loving the different animation styles, question is will it be dubbed or subbed, or both lol

@bobevanz - Real question is, will it be originally English language in that case the dub will be the Japanese version.

This looks really cool, and all the different styles and tones are interesting, sounds like there will be something for all kinds of audience. Wasn't sure what the project was about when it was first announced but now I'll definitely give it a try.

This is long overdue for Star Wars to be introduced on a larger scale. There have been a few representations of SW anime from independent animators that were really good. I’m looking forward to seeing this.

I have been on a little Samurai kick lately (rewatching Kurosawa movies, going through the 80's Shogun tv mini-series, rereading Usagi Yojimbo and playing through Ghost of Tsushima), so at the moment "The Duel" has me personally most interested, but this should be fun thing overall.

So is this gonna actually be canon. I don't think it can be right? The storytelling style might be so different it could be hard to make it fit tonally.

But even if it's not canon I still think so many are gonna love this.

@BloopBlorp2 - Maybe if the new Matrix 4 coming out soon proves popular WB can make a new Animatrix series for HBO Max. Probably wishful thinking, but I can dream.
